It was FIKA time in the office today. Just trying to bridge the gaps, we arranged this new custom in office. It was all new for us, a formal informal meeting..is what I could get out of this. Usual chai breaks (Chai means Tea in Hindi) with vadapav and pakora (Indian snacks), which we are accustomed to.. are totally unplanned, random. A formal invitation, and on dot scheduled FIKA.
However, it helped the cause though. Talking about various things, swedish culture, Indian way of looking into it.. Discussion started over a cake with Safron – A christmas special – one of my Swedish counterpart explained. A very rare and costly flower, only used during Christmas. We, in India, use Saffron in milk for pregnant ladies. People in India are dark, Saffron in milk, there is a myth that the kids who will be born, will be fair..:)
Admist all the conversations below was one which I wanted to share…
“Its 30 in India, as it is raining, otherwise its 40″ usual weather topic which will be the first to come up in any informal meeting. We boasting about how high temperatures can go, and Swedes about how low temperatures can go here..
“We heard some where that you leave kids outside so that they get accustomed to weather..is it true?” one of us asked, seriously “I cannot stand more than five minutes outside these days”
“If the kids fell asleep, when they are outside, they suffocated indoors. They get up and raise tantrums..its better to leave them outside..let them sleep there”
“Unattended!” Shocked, face red, one of us almost screamed. He was a father of 8 month old baby. Terrified by the thought of it. “I cannot leave my child for more than five minutes”
“Its ok, we can leave them and keep an eye on them from kitchen window, they are ok, jackets keep them warm” casual reply, horrified all of us
“You know what, this is a crime in India, police will keep you in Jail, if you attempt to do this in India..”
Everyone laughed..
“Are you serious?” still not convinced “Hope you are not kidding? I never saw that any where here in Stockholm” astonished.
“Yes, they will be fine, even we put the oldies outside, in the chair , in the garden, they sleep there”.
All of us were looking each other..such wide differences. In India, its all different. Parents take care of their kids, concerned about every moment of them. Raise them, and take care of them even in their teens. Parents are taken care by kids with the same level of attention and care in their late age. Its a different bonding all together.
But really, were they joking..made us fools? Does Swedes really leave their kids outside??
Googling around…A similar thought from an American..
