Mariebergs too strong for Stripes

The hometeam Mariebergs had their premiere for a new PA system at Stadshagen on Sunday evening and they needed it to give their team some congratulations after each of their four goals as this was more than their five supporters did. A very poor turn out for a team considered as being league contenders. The crowd of 59 was bolstered once again by a terrific away support for Långholmen and a few onlookers, including the biggest dog witnessed this side of the northern hemisphere.

Mariebergs are a very competent side and taught Långholmen a football lesson. Before the season even started they were one of the teams mentioned as being likely league champions and this was justified by a very clinical footballing performance.

The key to this game was the battle for the midfield and this was one hands down by the red shirted men, making Långholmen play the chasing game and hitting them time and time again with swift passing and good attacking football . A team puts at least one bad performance in a season, hopefully the players and fans alike of the away team witnessed theirs in this match. To sum up the evening for the away team the fourth goal was a very unfortunate affair when Bergquist hesitated in coming out to meet the oncoming Dmitri Haid, the big keeper just pipped the player to the ball but could only look on as it canoned off his shins and back into the net.

The Stripes whohad a very tough evening had created two half chances in the first forty five, first Björstrom Berglund saw a header go close at the back post and then Andy O’Sullivan looked like he was going to have a pop at goal but chose to lay it off to Chris Allen who couldn’t connect.

The first goal for the home team really was a gift as Olle Lindhe was given too much space inside the box and he wasted no time in looping his header past Bergquist. This was a bad time for the Stripes to lose a goal.

For the first five minutes of the second half things livened up for Långholmen and with the introduction of Robbie Graham saw a more determined outlook on the game. The Mariebergs defence took all the away team could throw at them and sat back and soaked up the early second half pressure and then came the two sucker punches that killed off the game. First another headed goal from a corner after some dreadfull marking again in the six yard box and a minute later Micke Engström took advantage of some slack play to slide the ball home form close range after some fine play on the wing.

Långholmen were sitting far too deep at times and had no plan B to revert to. A welcome sight right at the death was a well taking goal by Alistair Donnachie, making the step up from the second string.

Mariebergs will be very happy with their display and look like a very solid unit. The Stripes will enjoy a break from league football as they try and make the semi finals of the Stockholm Cup for the first time in the clubs short history on Wednesday night and then they need to get back on track against one of the bottom clubs Bromsten next Saturday.

Stripes best man Andy McClelland

Crowd: 59. Once again a good vocal suppåort for the team and the usual light hearted banter.
