Brussels centre of power & Anna Maria Corazza Bildt

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Anyone who has visited Washington DC knows that you feel the power and importance of the city and its inhabitants pulsing through the alphabetically named streets. It was with similar anticipation I flew in to Brussels, the capital of the world’s largest economy.

Two days prowling the halls of power provided ample time to compare and contrast the cultural differences between the EU and US. While Fredrik and the other EU leaders sit down tonight to horse trade over who will be the first president of the EU (the only thing for sure is it will not be an inspiring visionary leader like President Obama) I now see clearly what the winds of the Atlantic did not blow West from the old world to the new.

The EU Parliament is neither an inspiring or grand building and makes no clear architectural statement. Compared to the US Congress it looks more like the head office for a large multinational company than an institution designed to impress and awe. Inside it is light, spacious, no doubt complying to all EU Occupational Health & Safety laws and ergonomically sound. There are no statues of previous leaders although the main doors are all named after them and the only old stones visible were from the Berlin Wall, shipped in to commemorate the 20 anniversary of its downfall.

What I was unaware of is that the 736 Members of European Parliament are seated in the large but not grand parliament room by their political groupings rather than by country. The Swedish Moderates sit with the largest party, the European People’s Party and the Social Democrats sit with the European Socialists party. Politics, rather than nationality, is what binds the MEPs.

The EU legislative process is based upon consultation and consensus while DC is about numbers of votes and power. It is therefore hard to see a Barack Obama figure rising out of the MEPs as they would find it hard to espouse a vision that all EU citizens let alone their MEPs would believe in.

But there could be an exception……

One of Sweden’s newest MEPs is Anna Maria Corazza Bildt whom I had the opportunity to spend some time with and learn about not only the workings of the EU Parliament but also the issues she is passionately engaged with. And when I say passionately I mean it with a capital P. And I should add a capital I because her passion is only exceeded by her intelligence. As a former journalist I have met my fill of politicians, senior business leaders and even a man who flew to the moon and Anna Maria is one of the most impressive I have met.

Italian born, Italian and US educated, married to one of Europe’s leading politicians and fluent in at least 4 languages I heard her speak and from 1998 resident Swede, she spans borders, cultures, languages and can work a room like a pro. The very model of a modern EU MEP!

While I share some of her views including those on free trade I do not buy into all of them but the only person I do always agree with anyway is my wife! Right honey?

It is good for Sweden that almost 90,000 people crossed her name in the MEP elections earlier this year to push her up from 8th to 2nd place and secure one of the Moderate Party seats. While I can not always say that the people of Sweden get the leaders they deserve, with AMCB they have probably done even better.

Those who voted for her have big expectations, let us hope she lives up to them.

What does this have to do with wine freedom? AMCB previously ran a small e-commerce mail order business selling Italian wine and delicacies and I hope one day if needed, she will remember her free trade and entrepreneurial credentials of we need her help!

cheers

Finally lost for words…..

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

After the first day at the fair Det Goda Köket Fair (the Good Kitchen) I lost my voice and spent the next two days sounding rather deep and mysterious as I grumbled out words understood in neither Swedish or English. I am blaming my reduced vocal activity on speaking Swedish for 3 whole days. It was fun but crazy trying to take care of so many interested members. Here is a photo from yesterday (Saturday):

DGK 2009 172 vf DGK 2009 193 vf

It was a fantastic fair and wonderful to meet thousands of members and receive the positive comments on our wine and service. Having shared wines with our members for the past 5 years it is like meeting old friends and sharing memories. Nothing gives me more pleasure than hearing you thank us for the wine and service with real comments such as these:

“I have never never been disappointed by one of AWC’s wines.”

“Your wine and service is so wonderful I have told all my friends and work colleagues.”

“I am a very happy subscriber, never had a wine I didn’t like, how can I continue?”

“My neighbour is a subscriber and talks warmly of you so I thought I would come and sign up too.”

“We love AWC, we never have to go to Systemet now.”

“Your wine advisors are so great, I just love it when they call me, they almost sound surprised when I order every time!”

My voice got rest and my sales job was made easy by members standing around at the bar tasting the wines and explaining to prospective customers how wonderful the subscription service is and why they should also sign up. I just stand and pour the wine!

Without doubt our blue shirted team made AWC the busiest, friendliest and most successful stand at DGK. So many members commented that our wines are the best at the fair (all the wines are of the same high quality without exception) and we are the friendliest!

I can not agree more that our team of wine advisors and sommeliers are the most professional, friendliest and nicest you could find. It was an honour to work with them and see how they dealt with the considerable pressure of serving hundreds of people and answering all their questions. Lina and Sarah organised the fair with military precision and James, Johannes, Jimmy and Sarah presented the wines with untiring professionalism and flair it was like watching a well choreographed “Disney Wine on Ice” performance cramped behind the bar!

We made new friends, met old friends and some interesting new people including some friendly Australians, New Zealanders, Americans, Spaniards and Germans who always find a warm home and a friendly chat at the AWC stand.

Thanks to all who came to visit us and welcome to our new members who have now discovered how much fun and easy it is to experience great wines from around the world.

Cheers

Mark

p.s. and I came home to a wonderful Fathers Day dinner and our wayward cat had returned after 5 days “vacation”!

The Good Kitchen

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

I don’t usually write about where I am going but tomorrow I will be found wearing a bright blue shirt at our impressive stand at the biggest fair of the year for our business – Det Goda Köket (the good kitchen).

An army of blue-shirted AWC people will be there all psyched up to meet our members. For 3 days we will be sharing our wine with thousands of curious and interested members (old and new) and explaining the new way to buy quality wine.

I don’t get to attend the 80 or so events we conduct around the country each year meeting our members but DGK is a great chance for me to catch up with our members and make sure we are continuing to provide the best of both service and wine!

If you are coming to Älvjsö over the weekend do pop by to say g’day. You won’t miss us in the blue shirts and the hundreds of happy members buzzing around the stand!

Cheers

Mark

Five Crazy Years

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

A website, a 20ft container of wine, my wife Johanna, James on a half time basis and unbridled optimism that Swedish consumers would accept a new source of quality wine (even if then we had to sell via the government monopoly stores). That was how Australian Wine Club started 5 years ago and it has been a crazy journey since then.

The story of how the monopoly and its masters have tried very hard to destroy our company is well documented here and in many other publications but David has managed to survive against the Goliath, at least this far. But now we celebrate our 5 fantastic years of bringing quality wines from small producers to wine lovers in Sweden.

We have so many great memories of the last half decade meeting thousands of people (some of whom have become good friends) and sharing great wine with them that we have set up a new competition on Face Book to allow our members to share their best wine experiences by posting a photo to commemorate it. Click here to read about the fun way to take part in our anniversary.

5th Birthday Competition

I will dig through the archives to find some photos from the 2004 launch party and post them too! Hope you will take part and post some of your photos.

Thanks for the support of so many wonderful people over the past 5 years and raise a glass to the next 50 years of AWC!

Cheers

Mark
