Wine is best consumed. Cellar it, collect it but ultimately drink it. A new phenomenon is wine TV, which I have written about recently. But why watch wine?
You can learn stuff, that is why and if Gary is not your drop then perhaps Debra Meiburg Master of Wine is.
Debra is a California girl who turned up in HK about the same time I did about 20 years ago as an auditor but soon found her passion lay in oenology not figures. If Gary is like a NJ truck driver with a great palate then Debra is a CNN anchor woman with gifted taste buds.
Debra brings a relaxed, little bit glitzy but educational approach to wine that only an American could invent. Her certification as a Master of Wine (the top qualification in the WSET) puts her among the world’s most educated tasters and her knowledge and experience is evident in her videos and on her website.
During my recent tour through Israel Debra was an extremely good tasting partner and I learned a lot as she assisted some of our less experienced wine tasters on our tour (food journalists mostly) how to appreciate and understand wine. It is also fun to calibrate your palate against a MW!
This video is of the winemaker from Dog Point in NZ which you already know is one of my favourite wine producers in our large portfolio of wines. Before you watch the video remember that winemakers should make great wine, not great viewing!
I have not seen any video from the Israel trip yet but there is lots of Meet the Winemaker interviews on the site. However, if you must watch wine TV, at least do it with a glass of good wine in your hand!
Meet Debra Master of Wine, you will be wiser for it!
