I think it show there's something wrong here in Sweden when it's cheaper to take your car abroad to get it fixed. I fix as much as I can myself and buy my car parts from Britain where even for Saab parts I save a least half I would have paid in Sweden. Giving value for money doesn't seem to be a consideration here in Sweden.

Thanks for suggestions. That is what recommendations I received.
If I want to buy I can buy a second hand car easily in Sweden. But, if I want to sell it is like päin in the äss. The problem here is the buyer wants a perfect second car and the seller doesn't want to sell unless there is some problem in the car. When a small problem appears then none want to buy it and the Re-sellers are taking advantage out of the system. They pay very very less to the seller like 3 thousand or 4 thousand and earn enough on them. They fix the car cheaply by themselves and sell to a higher price.

Well, you are not 100% correct, it is not Sweden that much wrong, as it is Latvia, with its 5500 Krona average salary and all the prices almost the same as Sweden, people do anything just to get the job and get payed, so labour costs are really low, that's why repair costs little

I think the problem here is that everyone want 1000kr just to look at your car. I've been charged that for quite a few jobs from pushing a wire back in place to inserting a sensor. Jobs that were obvious and didn't need much time searching for. I have a relative who has just had to pay 10,000 for a service for his V70 and the only other thing they did was replace the front brake pads and discs.

I think it would be good if everyone started to go to Latvia to repair there cars, not to put Swedish garages out of business but to make them a little more competitive.

Going to Latvia to get your car fixed???????????? Yep, great idea, why doesn't everyone do that so Swedish garages close down, then when you break down on motorway who are ... (show full quote)

I have insurance here with Folksam. So, why would I call to Latvia. I would definitely call the Swedish Insurance and they will take the car for sure to the garage. You know what? Previously I had problem with my servo steering. It got locked. Then I called the assistans and they towed my car to the Upplands motors. Then, I could hire a car and it was 3 days free. But, still I had to pay some shit fees insurance or whatever and diesel price as well like 600 sek although the diesel was 150 sek I drove.
Then Upplands motors called me after a day they told the problem with air condition. They told we could replace a new one for 20 K. bla bla or we could just remove it off for 3 K. I told remove the AC off. I went to pick the day after. I did not had money at that time. I told can you send me the bill? They said no. You pay and take it up. They told you can take Volvo kort and pay it on spot. They called kreditupplyssning and told OK we can provide you the Volvo card right now. I used that and paid the bill for the car. Of course the Volvo credit card was free 30 days or 45 days rent free.
That is the reason the SL is increasing day by day. People are giving up cars especially in Stockholm and Sweden due to no increase in salaries since many years but increase in fuel price.

I presume this is a main dealer, go local. If I can't do it myself I'll get a local place to do it for us. I'll pop down with there they'll fidget or use so special tool that isn't worth me being as a one off, will probably cost me 200-300kr for his 30mins or so.

There are hundreds of small one man band places around that know how to 'fix' cars quickly and cheaply. My son had an old Volvo V40 that part of the electronic data box went kaput. Volvo quoted 8k to replace, an old ex volvo mechanic locally bypassed the faulty bit with a piece of wire for 200kr. The reason you see so many old Volvo's and SAAB's around is that the old Swedish mentality of " A car is for life" is still alive

With my car it wasn't an main dealer but a local village garage. I bet the 200-300kr you paid was cash? If you want to do thing correctly and get a receipt then they want 1000kr just to look.

Based on our recent experience of buying a second hand car it might worth seeing what you can get as part exchange. We had a pretty old Ford Foucs which would have probably got 15000-20000kr at best if we'd gone through the hassle of selling it privately. We spoke to some second hand dealers who said that they would give us 10000kr as part exchange towards a much newer second hand model. The car then failed its MOT and they still gave us 10000kr in part exchange (we were quoted 5000kr to fix). Shows what a good mark up they're making. This was in Stockholm.

I just replaced a brake line in my plow truck. It cost me about $7.00. BTW, use a jack stand when jacking up a car. Much safer than a rock.
