Recommendation for ISP

Yes I haven't really researched yet but can anyone reel off any decent ISP to consider for home broadband please?
I shall look properly but some general guidance in a direction would be handy.
Also, in the UK, it was hard to get Internet without having to pay for a landline phone, is it the same sort of thing here?
I never used any of my landline numbers and resented paying for them on top of the broadband service charges.
