Hi! I did my Car Besiktning today. There were some mistakes found. I have exactly 1 month to get them all repaired or it will become forbidden to drive. To change all the brakes as they were worn out. 2 cables as well. And, there is a leakage in Exhaust System. Need to change half of Exhaust channel as well. Went to a reputed workshop. They checked it and said totally it would cost around 10,000 sek. It is Ford Galaxy a family car 7 seater.
Now, the question is if I sell the car here I don't think I will get anything. Let's say if I put an ad then I have to reply to countless questions. If I give to a reseller then he might give me maybe a 1000 sek. Just thinking to travel to Baltic states Estonia or Latvia in a ferry and sell it. I am on holiday for a month now. Does anyone think if I repair it in Baltic states the price will be cheaper? If I sell in another EU country then what documents to I need? Do, I need to inform here or can I just sell in another EU country directly? Thanks for reading. |

You never know how much a reseller will give you for it. Try putting an ad on Blocket. There is always some Iraqi or whatever reseller who can fix this for cheap money, sell the car and still get a profit on it. Unless the car is very very old, then you better sell it for scrapping (skrotning).

depending on the age and general reliability of the car, fix it, sell it on in 6mths. Say you spend 10,000kr on it, that's less than 2000kr per month, plus what you get when you sell it. How much would spend on a replacement?
Shop around, it's not major work. |

Double check the control report. It is possible when they say You have 1 month to get the faults fixed it actually means You can only drive the car between home and the garage during that time? And that You need to get the car re-tested after the repairs?
Also, if you intend to sell it in Sweden, the buyer will most likely ask to see the control reports from bilprovning, or just get them direct from Transport Styrelsen, it is public information. Selling it for scrap, is actually not the done thing. Scrapping cars is free, paid for by the manufacturers as they have a responsibility for the correct disposal of their products. You might have to pay for them to take it away if You cannot drive it to the scrapping place. Maybe You could find a buyer who might want it for spare parts? To get the car fixed in say Estonia, You need to take into account that it will cost you 2.000+ just to get You and the car there and back, plus any additional costs if the work is going to take more than 1 day? How great can the real saving be? Maybe it is worth it, maybe the hassle isn't! I found that it is labour costs that really push up the price in Sweden, maybe You can find an out-of-town country garage that can do it with cheaper labour? |

Thanks for the response. I was actually planning to travel to Latvia. I have some friends there to visit. OK, I understand now that the labor cost is high in Sweden. Strange that the spare parts are not so expensive. So, just wondering why not make the repairs in Riga instead.
My Besiktning says (not sure what they exactly mean in English. Can someone help me to translate so that I can inform them the problem in English): Miljökontrollvärden (gränsvärden inom parentes): CO (0,5) HC (100) CO 2500 (0,3) LAMBDA (0,95-1,09) Bromsvärden: Vänster fram 3,0 Höger fram 2,8 Vänster bak 2,0 Höger bak 2,0 1. (EG: 6.1.2) Avgassystem, läckage, avgasmätning inte utförd 2. (EG:1.1.11) Bromsrör, längsgående, båda sidor, rostskadad |

if that was all of the errors, then you need to get your exhaust hole patched, you might not need to replace even 1 section. Unless the Cat. Converter is wrecked, or it's in an impossible place reach, this could be welded in no time at all. It can't be a big hole, otherwise everyone in the street would be looking as you drove by?
next, pipe corroded, this is not a massive job, a decent mechanic will remove the old ones, bend a new pipe to match the shape and fit. It will cost you a little in brake fluid to refill the system. But it's about 30mins a pipe, with 30mins max on top at either end. (presuming they come off without too much of a fight). Some car parts shops will sell the pipe by the metre, bend it and fit couplings for you. With some basic knowledge, few spanners, a brake bleed pipe, plastic tub and some brake fluid you could do this yourself. (presuming you can fit or get under the car!) No reference to changing brake pads or discs on there? Perhaps he just mentioned them verbally as being low? I 2nd yorkshire, find a local garage then use them for everything. Avoid city and main dealers. The bigger and fancier the garage, the higher the hourly rate. How else are they paying for it? If it has a waiting room, coffee machines, Tv, sofa, big glass fronts... Q. who is paying for that ? A. the customer. This isn't a big job, the fuel to Riga would more. |

Skogsbo is right, those repairs are an afternoon's work in a garage. Go to any car parts shop such as Mecca and they will order all the parts you need including a brake bleed kit (100kr). The exhaust likely needs just a patch which you can apply yourself.
Do a search on youtube for 'how-to's' on brake bleeds, disc changes etc... |

the only problem will be accessing the brake pipes, as a youth when I was doing my own repairs, rather than crawl under with just a car jack for support, I would park the car with 1 wheel on a high kerb, you can add a plank of wood to the kerb, if you want more height, or put a plank on the roadside to lift it a little more there. Just don't take risks. Remember you are working on the brakes! So chock the wheels and leave it in gear. When the wheel is off, put some bricks or a big stone in it's place under the axle (never trust just a car jack).

QUOTE Bromsvärden: Vänster fram 3,0 Höger fram 2,8 Vänster bak 2,0 Höger bak 2,0 There are many quick fix garages around that will do the minimum required for the re-test, mostly run by middle-east immigrants who are experts at do & mend on the cheap. After it has a new bestikning, I would recommend that you sell it as the brake pads/disks will certainly need replacing soon. |

Bromsvärden:. Vänster fram 3,0 Höger fram 2,8. Vänster bak 2,0 Höger bak 2,0 Your brakes look fine according to those figures? You are allowed a 30% difference between the wheels on the same axel. (it is measured in Kilo Newtons). Back brakes are the same, 0% difference, and front brakes the difference is only 6%. Did the control person say they were wearing out and probably need replacing? 1. (EG: 6.1.2) Avgassystem, läckage, avgasmätning inte utförd This is tricky, becuase it means they could not check the exhust output at-all due to a leak ... however, unless the control guy told You what he suspected was wrong, it could even just be a case of a leaky connection in the exhaust ... and teh solution could be just to push tightly together all the parts! Or as suggested, patch any leak found rather than replace. Though, in the big chains there is a definate replace rather than fix tendancy. 2. (EG:1.1.11) Bromsrör, längsgående, båda sidor, rostskadad Very cheap spare part, 100-200 SEK, possibly even cheaper if You go to Biltema. It is labour that will really add to the cost. |

The brake pipes are not too hard to replace. You can buy a pipe bending kit in Biltema along with the pipes. A bit of trial and error but not too complex.
Pads and rotors can be bought as a kit for around 500sek. The fitment is very easy and takes maybe 30 mins in total. The garage Q8 normally have GDS (Gör det själv) areas for power washing and typically have hydraulic ramps for your car where you can get in under with ease. Between brake lines, replacement pads and rotors and misc. items you could do this fix for under 1500sek yourself and a day's work for someone without experience. |

Don't do work on a sunday, when shops close early. If you can't walk to a shop, line up someone who can help give you a lift, it's always the way that something will break, you'll forget a part etc. when the shops are closed or you can't get there. It could be something as annoying as you knock the tub of brake fluid over just when you done and about to fill up! |

Well, I'd say that traveling to Riga is not a bad idea, but repairs that you have are not worth it.. All you have is fixed at a rete of 1000 sek in normal garage (not dealer of course) but 1000 there and 1000 sek back would ruin all.
As for selling it here, it is not that easy, unless you put a small price (and some reseller calls you in 3 minutes) or have at least a week to show the car. Another option is to register a car on local (as you have friends) and put it on commission (100 eur after selling, which is much much better than 10000 sek that i got proposed from Stockholms dealer) And the third option is to sell it to me, as I'm looking for a bigger car, and your model is one of my choices ;-) |

Going to Latvia to get your car fixed???????????? Yep, great idea, why doesn't everyone do that so Swedish garages close down, then when you break down on motorway who are you going to call, some guy in Latvia to come have a look. I am sure he will arrive within 2 days so just sleep in the car until then.
