I have lived in Göteborg more than 20 years and i cant get a decent portion of fish and chips. The English pubs are crap (Liseberg is better). The only time ive had a real feast up was when a guy called Ross had his double decker bus in town.
How is it where you live?

It's dificult enough to get good fish and chips in the UK (or at least in Reading where I last lived). I havent tried fish and chips in Sweden. I guess I automatically assumed they would be no good at it. I do however make my own. the fish is great... making propper chip shop chips is a bit dificult though (I come from the north east where propper chips are pretty much soggy with a gentle hint of crispiness on the outside).

I also do my own at home and it always turns out nice but i need a new chip pan

Not a big fan of the quality of potatoes and lack of varieties over here TBH.
I know that will annoy some of the natives, but it's been discussed many times before on this forum.

In regards to fish however, many would argue that cod is easier to get ahold of in Sweden if you don't mind paying for it. Obviously in recent years there has been the issue with "cod worm" which has put a lot of people off from eating fish.

I have always wondered if a chippy was to open in one of the major cities, just how expensive it would be for fish n chips. I know of a place in central Stockholm that claims to do fish and chips ... Which basically consists of a fish finger with French fries drizzled in some cheap mayo

Yeah, we live in Stockholm and have found "ok" fish and chips in some of the restaurants, but not "proper" fish and chips...

Its not just fish and chips we miss though, we went into an irish bar the other day and I noticed under the irish specialities section they had "irish sausages and mash potato", our first hope of proper sausages. Just thought I would check before I ordered it, and the waitress said it was actually a Swedish sausage with cheese in the middle.... gutted.

Most UK chippies use King Edward potatoes for chips.

They are always available in ICA etc. but I buy a 10kg bag of King Edwards from my farmer friend

Malt vinegar is not usually available, but it can sometimes be found on the foreign food shelves

Tried looking but can't find it. I usually bring back some from the UK each time I am there.

I was told that for the best fish and chips , you should use beef dripping. Any thoughts on this?

Malt vinegar is not usually available,

there'd be no viable commercial purpose for it.
