Hi all!
As i can't do SFI, I am thinking of doing the A1 level Swedish course at Folkuniversitetet, the one that is 2hours 15 every working day for 4 weeks. As it's a lot of money (5200Kr) i was wondering if someone here has done it and can tell me if it's worth it. I could also consider the twice a week course that is about 2500Kr (5 weeks) - but of course i guess i would learn a lot less... Tack |

Folkuniversitet - has a good reputation generally although sometimes people get a bad teacher
However the cost really mounts up if you are intending to become fluent and need to study for several years |

Yeah, that's the thing, for now i only intend to do this one course with them... So spending this amount of money to become just "a bit better" is a bit annoying... But i guess i have to start somewhere, mhhh

It depends upon two things.
1) Is the teacher you end up is good and make you work without you realizing it. I took two paid courses with them. First the teacher was awesome. The moment anyone stepped in the class he will start with him/her. Asking questions and making us talk. We all talked non stop. Then during course work he made us do exercises and gave us tons of homework. We all whinned all the time for amount of homework but it was for our good eller? In the end when we finished the course majority of us decided to go next level. We told them we need same teacher but for some reason in the last minute it did not work out. Next teacher was disaster. The only thing he did during class time was make us read the chapters after him. He talked most of the time. No discussions no debates no friendly fights in class nothing. BTW this was in Göteborg. 2) The group in the class. In case if you end up in the class with lots of germans, then you are at disadvantage as these people are fast in picking up Swedish stuff being closer to their native german and that decides the pace of the class. In time like this, the teacher can swing things in perspective by making slow students get in pace with rest of the class. Hope I did not confuse you. Don't go for 2500 SEK course as they are not much giving in terms of knowledge. If you have lots of free time, do 5200 SEK course and complain to teacher if not enough home work is given. Also try to speak swedish with whole class however faltering. It helps. During the breaks specially. When I did one course my teacher used to warn us to speak swedish while leaving class room for breaks. He was dedicated one and deeply cared about if we are learning something or not. Apologies for terrible English in the post. |
