Hi guys, I realize we have covered this off before but the search function did not really give me what I was looking for.
I am looking to transfer some money from Aus into Sweden to my normal bank account from Aus. To keep it in round numbers, let's say it was ca 100k (approx 710,000 SEK). Keeping in mind it's had tax paid on it in Aus, what (if any) tax implications will there be when it arrives here? Would it be smarter to split the transfer 50/50 between me and my wife or make no difference at all? Or is it better to bring it over in smaller amounts every 6 months. It would be great to bring it all now as the exchange rate is extremely good at the moment. Thanks in advance for advice. |

From my own experiences of transfering large amounts of money from one private account to another from different countries. Any sums of money deposited into your bank account over a certain amount (I think it's about 150.000SEK) the bank informs the tax office. This will appear on your tax return but they won't tax it. They might get in contact to ask where the money has come from and assess whether it is liable for Swedish tax. At the end of the day if you are moving it from one private account to another it will not be taxed.

Doesn't matter if you split it into smaller amounts. Any transactions exceeding 150000SEK/year will be reported to the tax office. However, you are not liable for any tax anyway.

Thanks for the replies people. Its great to know actually from people with experience, as I have heard conflicting things (generally from people with no personal experience).
Any advice on a forex provider to use? The banks rate are just plain rude! Thanks again!! |

Because we couldn't open a Swedish bank account from NZ, we transferred our money into my mother in law's account in Sweden. Fortunately, being a typically honest Swede, she didn't promptly leg it to the Bahamas. She did, however, get contacted by the tax department in Sweden who wanted to know how the bank account of an 80 year old widow suddenly increased by so much. Once she explained, and they were satisfied that she wasn't the bag man for an Estonian drug baron, they thanked her and went on their way. No worries.

QUOTE The banks rate are just plain rude! This simply is not true. If you convert into SEK in Sweden...i.e. let one of the main commerical Swedish banks to it...you will get a rate that it very close indeed to the current market rate. |
