Once you have received a resident permit in another state or country you have 30 days to change your license over or it is rendered invalid. You can NOT hold a license in Sweden and have a valid license in the USA. You can drive on a Swedish license in the USA but you can not legally have a USA license if you are not a resident.

Some states don't keep track of your current residence. I have used my US license with my parents' address on it when I have visited and never encountered a problem and I have lived in Sweden 2+ years. I have even been able to renew it online. It may not really be legal, but it's a lot more convenient to have a local ID. If you allow it to expire, you will just have to pay a little more when you renew it. Unless you move to a different state, you shouldn't have to retest and depending on the state, perhaps not even then.

You cannot switch a driver's license from either the US or Canada to a Swedish one. You have to take both the Swedish theory and driving test :-(

I have an english copy of the Swedish driver's license study books & CD for sale. I used this to pass my test in March 2012 - passed on the first attempt (had a driver's license from Canada).

Can anyone give some idea of how long the process of getting a Swedish license takes? My Canadian one won't be valid here by next August (9 months) so I want to know when I need to start looking into getting the Swedish one.

- I need to learn to drive manual transmission (have a vague idea - done it 5 or 6 times - not confident)
- I know there can be a long waiting period to get a test date
- I have no car to practice on
- I am underemployed so much pinch every penny - no extra costs at all.
