Former leader Mona Sahlin has been offered by the centre-right Government the post of Secretary-General of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the UN's labour organisation, according to Sveriges Radio.

I wonder. Has this been somehow a part of the give and take between M and S before the latest agreement on Swedish participation to the new europack thing? Or nothing to do with it?

It's a normal thing in Swedish politics that former party leaders/MInisters take up international roles such as UN or EU (like Bildt in the 1990s) or an honourary role in Sweden such as a County Governorship (Landshövding)
In fact Persson was a little unsual that he chose private consultancy - but then again he was building a new house for 30 million kronor! In any case Sahlin has long had contacts in the UN - remember all of the controversy when she used them to secure a very sought after UN internship for her daughter a few years ago that enabled her to leapfrog all of the applications by Swedish students that had applied through the normal channels |

I don't think its by any means just in Swedish politics this happens. The UK Labour Party had several prominent figures who accepted international roles (former leader Neil Kinnock who became an EU Commissioner for example) I guess that when you're seen, and heard, on a 'public stage' the corridors of the mighty are assessing you, and considering your next little niche in life |

I see Mona Sahlin is following her usual career path of failing upwards. |

I think that the usual expression is 'getting kicked upstairs'.
Another is 'getting promoted above their capabilities'. As we see how Blair is doing so well at being some sort of peace envoy for the Middle East, spending most of his time travelling round the world and giving lectures to idiots who pay a fortune to listen to him, thereby making him even richer than before. The Kinnocks, too, are living off the fat of the land as a result of their 'engagement' in the EU. It is strange how ex-politicians like to go to Brussels - could it be the financial advantages of living off the taxpayer to an even greater rate? One exception seems to be Göran Persson, who has become a champagne socialist living literally off the fat of the land. So - as to Mona Sahlin - no doubt she will take the job if there is no competition, although I have heard that the UK has another candidate. Of equally 'fine' qualifications no doubt. |

One exception seems to be Göran Persson, who has become a champagne socialist living literally off the fat of the land. He has that private consultancy job doesn't he? although the "consulting" seems to mainly about arranging contacts between business and his old politico cronies Although I have heard that he is not so keen to talk to people about decisions *he* personally made QUOTE So - as to Mona Sahlin - no doubt she will take the job if there is no competition, although I have heard that the UK has another candidate. Of equally 'fine' qualifications no doubt. Is it Gordon Brown?????? |

As I remember it was NOT McBrun, but I can't recall the actual name. Not one that I was in any way familiar with.
They seem to make a habit of getting kicked upstairs, don't they? |

Typical. Make a muck up or cause a scandal and they will always end up in a well paid job. Its the old school tie club syndrome.
Also not to be forgotten is auntie Maud from the centerpartiet whom is getting a top job |
