Hello everybody, how are you?
I'm not exactly sure how this works but... My mother is Swedish and my Father is Canadian. When I was born, I had dual citizenship. I read somewhere that when a dual citizen reaches the age of 20 (maybe 21?) they lose their Swedish Citizenship, unless they go reapply at the embassy of Sweden in the country the reside.(I missed a lot of the details, because my Swedish is a little foggy.) I live in Canada, and am 21 years old. I have been to Sweden, many times through the course of my childhood. (The last time would be in 2003, if that counts for anything.) I would really like to go back to Sweden to live for a few years, maybe even to study. Do I have to go reapply for my citizenship? Am I still a citizen? |

Has it not occured to you to go to the Swedish embassy in the Canadian city closest to you? It is unlikely that you are going to find an answer on this forum.

Unless your nearest Canadian city is Ottawa, you are very unlikely to find an embassy in it...

Here you have the info about losing citizenship if born abroad: http://www.migrationsverket.se/info/287_en.html
You lose it at the age of 22 unless you file a form, so in your case you still have time. Here is info about regaining it: http://www.migrationsverket.se/info/289_en.html |

You will loose your citizenship at the age of 22 if you are born outside Sweden, have never been domiciled (folkbokförd) in Sweden, are a citizen of another country, and have not been to Sweden under circumstances that indicate a link to Sweden.
In order to retain your citizenship, you need to show Migrationsverket that you can read, write and speak Swedish (certificate), and that you have been visiting Sweden regularly. Since you have not visited Sweden for almost a decade, your link to Sweden is not very strong and your application may therefore be declined. However, if you are domiciled in Sweden before you 22 birthday, you will not loose your citizenship. |
