I will be moving from South Wales to Sweden in May 2013 and wondered if anyone had any good solutions for moving home?

Having moved home from Sweden to the UK, and then back again 7 years later, I hired a container on both occasions. Moving to the UK I had packers to do the packing, but coming back, I was able to do all that myself. Used Tor Line for shipping, and a haulier brought the container to the door, on a stand. The only 'problem' was in the UK with the customs. The packers had used a 'Swedish-English' dictionary, and one box was labelled 'gallows' but all it contained was clothes hangers. Galger in Swedish. Caused a bit of a laugh eventually.
But when the move was made back, customs here were not interested in the least, and all went more than smoothly, except for the lift up to the apartment, which was minimal. Other than that, the cost was reasonable then - 1974. But even if I could remember what it was, it would be immaterial today. That was my experience anyway, if it is of any help. |

if you use the search button on the forum you'll find a few different threads. They discuss the various ferry options, self drive or hiring a removal company. There are some variables, namely how much stuff you have to move, spare time, and how far north in Sweden you intend to live.
I self drove from Yorkshire to Smäland, using Immingham to Rotterdam ferry, with about 30-35m3, but I have my heavies licence so I could hire a truck. Took 5days in total. |

When we moved from Ireland a little over 2 years ago we hired a 20ft. Container and did all the packing and unpacking ourselves. It was about one third the cost of having a removal firm do the job. From memory €2,500 vs. €7,500.
Check with DSV they have an office in south Wales, they are a big Danish haulage fiirm whom I have found to offer competitive prices to Sweden, but price around some others as well as I have found that there can often be a huge difference in prices from one company to another for the same job. Discuss with them loading and unloading times, the standard allowance is 2 hours for each before you start to incur extra charges. We had everything boxed and wrapped, with as much sitting outside the house as possible before the truck arrived. We took about 2 hours 10 mins to stuff the 20ft. 3 guys working flat out all with plenty of experience of packing furniture. If you are doing the job yourself it is good to be well organised. |

If you are doing the job yourself it is good to be well organised. So true, I hired the truck 2 days earlier than the ferry. It was packed tighter than a natt's ch--- . Good if you can arrange some help at either end, or share the driving if you're doing it all yourself. |
