Does any one else think that public loos are hard to find here?? I was out in town on Saturday and found myself badly needing to go, the first toilet I found had a queue of about 15 women. I searched for another 20 minutes and alas nearly had an accident before dashing into a restaurant..
Why so hard?? |

I have no idea, but I agree that it's a problem. Sometimes the toilets that do exist are local knowledge rather than conspicuously signposted, as if tourists would need them any less. I'm not sure if the problem is much worse in Sweden than elsewhere, though. |

It is a problem in Sweden that public toilets are thin on the ground
Petrol stations are my standby as there are always public toilets there My other secret loo source is churches - they almost always have a loo - quite often libraries and museums Otherwise big supermarkets, cafes, bars, train stations Sometimes you can throw yourself on the mercy of shops - have done this more than once but helps to be in the company of a child under 5 |

Because of the weather and likelyhood of freezing public loos are few and far between as they need heating.
You usually find them in Supermarkets/Shopping Malls. That way the shops pay for the upkeep rather than the Kommun |

Here's a tip. I lived in Goteborg but found it works EVERYWHERE!
Pick any restraunt and head straight to the toilets. If any of the staffs shoots the look of "can I help you?", simply smile and rub you hands together in a washing motion . I assure you, you will be returned a smile and a finger pointing the way to the loo. I am seldom noticed upon exiting but if you are another smile and a"tussen tack" will get you a wave and the occasional smile. |

I'm surprised that with all the taxes we pay (and in spite of the weather), toilets aren't something that are more readily available. It's awful if you have health problems that require frequent bathroom stops, and one doesn't always have the 5 SEK needed in mall or other toilets (or as in Uppsala, even in the library!). Public toilets would also cut down on the amount of people peeing in the street. For an otherwise civilized country, this is quite disgusting. |

QUOTE It's awful if you have health problems that require frequent bathroom stops, Many moons ago We stopped at Legoland in Billund on our way from Sweden to the UK. I ate a rather dodgy burger with some white sauce over it that started to have an adverse effect as soon as we got on the motorway south to our next overnight stop at Bremen. Thank goodness the Danes and Germans provided free toilet facilities at all the rest areas along the route. I think I inspected every one of them |

Uppsala is easy - just wander into any of the University buildings - and there are loads of loos - in University house there are lots in the basement next to the café - in the Dag Hammarsköjld/Juridkum Library right in the centre - just inside the front door - at the ekonomikum - just avoid arriving on the hour when the huge lecture theatres take a breal I always carry several 5kr in a special pocket in my purse for the station |

Seems like you have a mental map of all the loos wherever you go. |

I guess it is not specifically a Swedish issue, but there does appear to be a shortage of them here. Funnily enough, the cafe I went to on Saturday charged 5kr for access. So had to go to the counter (red in face and sweating) to change a 20kr note... It was so bad, the guy obviously new I was about to sh*t myself.

Gee thanks guys... was just a simple observation about public toilets. Why do some posters here have to be such jerks?
I have a medical condition (IBS). It is no joke I can tell you. Do you know what it feels like to have little or no control over your own bodily functions?? It is a terrible feeling. Would you be so cruel to someone suffering from another ailment? The reason why I asked about toilets is that I have been caught out on a few occasions and was just looking for some help. |
