Hi Guys,

I am planning to import a used car from Germany and going to drive all the way to Sweden. But I am planning to spend around 10 days in Denmark on my way. I am not sure whether I am allowed to stay such a long time with out proper registration and insurance. I would appreciate if you can share your experience and or your valuable comments and suggestions..

To my knowledge you can not spend any time without proper registration or insurance.

wont you get a log book (think its called that)where seller wrights the car over to you, you put your details on it, address etc. then you can get insurance right (i think) i got my car from the uk but can't remember what i done...i do know i got insurance for the trip over...but that only took 2 days, then once in Sweden (i think) you have x amount of days to get it registered so one can get insurance, road tax.

I'm pretty sure you can get it insured for the 10 days or so but it won't be cheap.

When buying the car in Germany you also need to get export plates. You either have to visit the appropriate authority or can sometimes pay the dealer around 200EUR to do it for you. Export plates come with basic traffic insurance and are usually valid for two weeks, but you can also get export plates for 30 days.

As long as the export plates are valid you can go anywhere in Europe. If you want additional insurance on top of the basic traffic insurance you have to contact a Swedish insurance company.

Without proper registration or insurance? What is improper registration or insurance? Is that the same as NO registration and NO insurance, which is NOT an option.

As for importing a car, there are several rules concerning whether you need to register the vehicle on entry. Two of the major contributing factors are firstly, mileage/age (under a certain mileage or less than 12 months old (or possibly 6 months old). I know that some older vehicles, if they haven't completed enough mileage are still classed a new cars so best check. Secondly, how long you have owned the car, if you travel to Gemany for the purpose of buying the car and bringing it back you will need to declare it at the border.

All your answers are here: (I'll do the internet search for you!)

Thought it funny the link says ...tart to finish lol

Anyway this information is quite important taken from the link above:

QUOTE
If the vehicle is new and from another EU country, you should notify the Swedish Tax Agency's office in Ludvika that you have bought a vehicle.
A copy of the sales document (sales contract) should also be sent to the Swedish Tax Agency. According to the rules for value added tax, a vehicle is regarded as new if the vehicle had been driven for less than 6 000 kilometers when it was purchased, or if the vehicle has been on the road for less than six months. It is sufficient for only one of these criterias to be met for the vehicle to be regarded as new, please see the examples below. Value added tax will be payable on the purchase price.

Example 1:
The vehicle has been used for 4 months but has travelled 12 000 kilometers.
The vehicle is regarded as new and value added tax should be paid.

Example 2:
The vehicle has been used for 14 months but has travelled 3 000 kilometers.
The vehicle is regarded as new and value added tax should be paid.

Example 3:
The vehicle has been used for 14 months and has travelled 12 000 kilometers.
The vehicle is regarded as used and value added tax should not be paid.
