Hej there,
I am looking at the possibility of relocating to Sweden for an opportunity with a Swedish MNC in Almhult as a Product Developer. I have roughly 7 years of work experience and a Master Degree in Industrial Design. Would like your views on possible salaries before /after tax to lead a slightly above average life. I will be moving with my wife and 3 yr old daughter. Any views on living in Malmo and commuting would be great too. Regards, Philip |

Malmö is the third largest town in Sweden and with that comes both pros and cons. You won`t have any problems finding stuff to do. There is always some music or sportsevent going on. There are festivals and parties going on. But living in the city means that it will be noisy and a higher crime level.
Malmö is on the up and up, it`s transforming from a workingcity to an educationcity. There`s buildings going on and it`s only 10 minutes away from the university city of Lund. It`s also located by the sea and only 30 minutes from Copenhagen. When it comes to commuting it takes about 1h and 15 minutes to go from Malmö to Älmhult. |

Malmö is the third largest town in Sweden and with that comes both pros and cons. google would tell you more! The problem with Malmo is you'll want to leave on the edge of town or at least close to, as you'll presumably want a house with a garden for the kids etc. To communte up to Ikea means that you'll need to get the main express train x2000, which only stops at main stations, Malmo and Lund etc, so you'll have to travel into town to get the train first etc. with over an hour on the train on top. Why Malmo? Live local to älmhult? Salary, if you are worth your salt and in demand, then Ikea will probably try to match your salary to the top end of the Swedish range. With my partner who works there, she named her price, they couldn't meet it in cash directly, but agreed to top up the remainder into a pension scheme (cheaper for them tax wise). Basically if you are any good, don't ask for too little first time round. My sambo gets the train in 4 days a week to there, from a different direction. If you really want to work / live that far apart, ask about a compressed working week, so you travel less. Many employees travel over an hour on the train to get there every day, so you won't be alone, but it's not much of a life. If you plan to move long term, you will get a large detached house at a very reasonable price with 20-30mins of there, but it does depend on what lifestyle you want. Vaxjo, might be a reasonable half way house between big city life and the countryside. |

Thanks Migga and Skogsbo,
Both very useful information . I am going to look into Vaxjo. Problem is, I know travel is not good, but I come from a city with a population of nearly 20million and although we are looking for a little slower life I hope Almhult does not leave us tearing our hair out. Secondly I really want my daughter to get exposed to plenty of the arts, culture , dance etc. . From what I have seen, I would have blindly gone in for Malmo but somehow the crime levels really seem to be increasing...or is it just the Local. And this is really playing on my mind. Anyway thanks for the help. Cheers

Sorry, that is wrong information. The SJ2000 does not even stop in Älmhult(*)... The IKEA commuters take the Öresund trains, of which there are two an hour at commuting times. This also means that you can live in the nicer parts of Malmö like Limhamn or Bunkeflostrand and get on at Hyllie.

Indeed quite a few IKEA commuters från Växjö, which has a decent selection of cultural activities for a town of its size. A risk of buying/building a house in the sticks around Älmhult is not getting your money back if you want to sell. Perhaps if it is attractive as a summer house for Danes/Germans... * Correction: One SJ2000 per day and direction (plus another one only on Monday mornings...) does stop in Älmhult, but not at times useful for commuting from Malmö. |

Quite a lot of the people I met there lived in Helsingborg - a lot closer than Malmö and a decent sized town - also has a ferry to Denmark & connections to Lund & Malmö

If you are all full on city slickers and value the city things more than anything rural, then Malmo is pretty much you're only option. There is stuff happening in closer towns, but not on the scale to which you are accustomed. You should probably have a plan around schools first and go from there.

Yeah you are correct, my mistake, I clearly wasn't paying attention on any of the journeys north from Copenhagen airport. I don't think house prices will fall, but you'll loose out because of the fees you pay etc. as they aren't going to rise much either. It does of course depend on how long you plan to stay and what you want. |

Many of those "bargains" in the middle of nowhere in Småland aren't exacly in the best shape. It does of course depend on how long you plan to stay and what you want. Indeed. |

The few people i know who work in Ikea all live in Malmo and they sleep on the trains on the way to work :-) but i think Helsingborg is also a very good option for you.

Thanks Fridae...How much would be the time saved out of Helsingborg ?
Comforting to hear a salary in the 40+ range....most forum finds have talked of salaries around 30-35K in general across industries and I was like man does the egalitarianism work strong here. Thanks a plenty. |

i think 30k might be too low in light of your experience, but i'm not in HR, so i don't know. You'd save about 35 mins if you live in Helsingborg
