can't add much to the above, other than, 39 is not old. Given normal life expectancy you are roughly half way through your life. You have the potential to work for another 20 or 30 years, going back to the UK and re-grouping for a few years, isn't going to impact it much, it will feel like a major step back though, that is the harder part to cope with. However escaping a $hitty relationship, sooner rather than later, won't do you any harm either.

Thanks everyone for the replies. This has been a really confusing time for me and I'm so afraid of making the 'wrong' decision.

I have been sending out CVs left right and centre. I am getting no luck in Sweden but I got an interview for a very (very!) basic part time position in Copenhagen. At first I was overjoyed but then I put my logical thinking cap on!

If I work in Copenhagen doesn't it go against the very idea of settling into a new independent life in Sweden? I'm trying to get my head around SFI at the moment and I know it will be hard to learn Swedish when I'm working abroad and living alone in Sweden. I also need to complete SFI and SAS in order to pursue my career formally in Sweden. I suppose I'm wondering if I'm making things more difficult for myself than I need to?

Do I need a separate work visa for Denmark if I commute every day?

Can I live on a very basic Danish part-time salary (unsure of specifics as yet)?

If I can get an interview for a Danish position from blitzing places with my CV in a few days does that suggest that I may have luck in Sweden if I keep trying for another week or two?

I think my heart is secretly set on working in Sweden. Am I just setting myself up for a fall?

Thanks for the links to the organisations. To be honest, I'm a little fearful of approaching them for support as I don't have any fear of physical threat. It is more emotional abuse and a strange manipulative type at that. I do love him (the old story, I know!). By giving up a well paid job back in London and remaining financially dependent on him here the situation has become worse. I just want my own income and then I will have my power back and not feel like I 'need' him.

I understand I will have to face the reality that I may need to return to the UK if this doesn't work out.

I just wanted to update anyone that was interested on my situation.

I have a job interview lined up. In Sweden!

It is for a very basic job and I'm unsure if the employer is aware that my Swedish language skills are basically non-existent.

I'm in shock. I don't know how many others are attending for interview. I am tentatively excited and have not mentioned it to anyone I know yet.

I'm not sure what to wear for interviews here but I'm starting to read through previous posts for an idea.

I'll keep you updated.

Good for you! Regarding clothing, imagine that there was a reality show about your new job and try to think of what the contestants would be wearing. Your everyday clothes will probably do at an interview.

To the best of my knowledge, you don't need a separate working visa to work in Denmark as an EU citizen.

Well, that could be a stepping stone to a better job. Hold tight to the bed at hand first, then keep chasing the ones in the bush. I think Denmark is a better place to find work when it comes to language barrier. In Sweden, even when an advertisement is written in English, they still demand for fluent Swedish in most cases.

If that is the case, maybe you could work something out with your former employer? (I don't know how possible is that though).

I rest my case by wishing you good luck.

Good luck!

As for what to wear to the interview: Sweden tends to be fairly informal. However, this is not true everywhere. I've found black pants and a blouse or a nice sweater work, with a jacket for being even more formal. The rule I've always used is dress-up but be comfortable.
