Hi all!

I was wondering if anyone of you got the tick (fästing) vaccine. I am very afraid of ticks, got some last year and I really wanna avoid getting Lyme disease. Does the vaccine actually work or is it just bla bla to feel safer?
I mean, it doesn't cost much, but is it worth getting it? How long does it last? Months, years? When should one get it again?

Thank you for the answers in advance:)

I thought treatment for ticks, or rather lymes disease or borelia was a course of specific antibiotics once the disease was confirmed. Dogs flea and tick treatment, just repels them from keeping on biting, I don't think it actually stops them appearing in the first place, certainly not on our dog anyway.

The chances of a tick bite are low, provided you wear appropriate cover when outside in high risk areas and/or check for any of the little critters once home, or through the day. Even if one sneaks past your defense, it's still not certain you'll catch anything either! Just be vigilent and you've nothing to fear.

I wouldn't get it, and I got European tick fever once - it was no fun. The lymph gland in my back got as big as a golf ball, and me and my girl friend were really sick for about three weeks. It was only from taking tetracyclin that we ever recovered.

You should always inspect your body after you have been out in the woods, and take a shower to reduce the chances of there still being one on you.

And if you go to the trouble of being some kind of medication, you should still do the same.

Say it just doesn't work and you still end up sick.

You can prevent ticks getting to you if you just take care about the possibility.

And whatever you do, still go out in the woods, and enjoy. Just amazed by how people are scared off them by the mere thought of a tick.

Another "useful" (read: braindead) advice by Trowbridge blink.gif . I have seen a TBE case and it was a total nightmare. The person did not survive.

Vaccines do nothing against ticks (their willigness to bite you) or the psychological fear of ticks, so other measures are needed. They will, however, give very high immunity against Lyme disease and close to 100% against TBE ( after multiple vaccinations ).

For some perspective on the issue:

The yearly incidence of new TBE cases in Sweden is roughly the same as new HIV/AIDS cases (somewhat above 200 in each case).

And finally a disclaimer:

I am not vaccinated myself. I have traveled through jungles in various places around the world. Insects do not like me.

Its not something you should worry about. Just be carefull with your personal hygene. Its unpleasant to catch but I also know that the symptoms can be used to gain extra sick time from the system if want to, and I think this is the main problem. I live in the country, the cat gets them, but as long as you are aware its no problem. Dont walk in the woods because of the snakes, dont sit beside the water because of the rats, safer to stay home and look out the window ???

I live in an area with a pretty fair amount of ticks and I've never had one attach themselves to me (maybe I stink). If you're careful, I think you'll be fine.

My vote is no to the vaccine.

Well, last year I've been bitten by 2, they weren't that big, yet, thank god! They were discovered in time and removed, then killed biggrin.gif I didn't get any disease, thank God, but you can never know.. I guess everyone says NO, then. Being careful is an option, too, why not smile.gif
But how often should one get the vaccine, anyway? Monthly, yearly?

I just don't wanna get infected by them, they can bite me as long as they don't transmit some exotic disease.. biggrin.gif

it's far from exotic, if you are quick to remove them before they sink their teeth in, zero risk! Plus it is more than treatable, especially in the early stages. Many pet shops sell little V shape wire pullers, that make it easier to remove them fully intact.

I'm outside in the fields and forest everyday. To reduce the risk I just don't wear shorts etc.. and check myself. It's hassle free and certainly no reason not to enjoy the countryside. Plus if you cover yourself up, you are at less risk of sun burn too, so you don't need sun cream or to pump yourself full of vaccination drugs! smile.gif

You got it right 100% skosbo. Problem is papers like Expressen like to put something on the front page to grab attention when the news is quiet. "Dont go in the woods the insects is dangerous, you can die "

Yeah but you haven't heard the best of it! The tick which bit our beloved disseminator of abject nonsense was part of a deliberate "hit" on him.

In the US, the president so enraged by being caught out by Trows spectacularly accurate analysis of his toilet roll consumption decided to take revenge on him by asking the guys at Area 51 to contact the Reptilian government on the planet Galifray. He then got them to use their telepathic mind control abilities to entice the tick to exclusively target Trowbridge. This of course was only after they first directed it to their secret nano-lab where they infected it with a genetically altered Lyme Disease bacteria especially enhanced for potency with the side effect that even though it was Trow who was bitten, his girlfriend suffered vicarious symptoms for weeks afterwards!

Trow, of course, being of a superhuman constitution survived this attack just like he has survived all the other ones whilst displaying that well known technique to avoid assassination by living openly and with his location readily available on the internet whilst using his time drawing attention to himself by "outing" all the crimes and conspiracies which his would be assassins are participating in.

It is just so obvious... can't you see?

Are you sure Jim? Perhaps it wasn't a tick, but a nano-bot, made to look like a tick. Trow's enemy could have released 1000s of these and they are all hunting him down. Much more elegant than a tick, they were in all seasons too.

Lyme disease is treatable, TBE is not. That's why the health authorities recommend vaccination for people who are outdoors a lot in affected areas.

Also, unlike lyme disease, removing ticks in an early stage is not effective to prevent TBE.

Well one there is one thing at least which checks out. Contracting Lyme disease can result in negative consequences for the brain of the infected; an effect which certainly seems to tally the impression which our beloved Trowbridge confers. Perhaps it was this tick bite which has caused his insanity!

First one any time now, second one two weeks later, third one 6 months later and that gives you a 3 or 5 year protection.

I just got my last one as i am outdoors a lot. Got mine at Stockholm Medical Office and they give anyone regardless of personnummer and such stuff. I think they were around 300 each but you can probably google for it as they sometimes come in a bus to the local ICA and places like that...
