For nannies
- it is very hard to make a living in Sweden as most parents only want a baby sitter now and again or to help out for a couple of hours a day
- even the cheapest au-pair wage - 3500 per month for 25 hours per week- is 3 times what parents pay in the state childcare system (1260 for full time) - so few parents hire full time nannies
- most nannies either live in and earn 3500 or live out and work a few hours a week for 70-100 kr/hour
- It is worth looking at private houskeeping companies such as Maid in Sweden who hire english speaking cleaning and baby sitting staff

For parents
- hiring a nanny/baby sitter can be a legal minefield so do some homework
- it is usually not a problem if you are hiring someone for a few hours a week
- BUT you pay someone more than 10,000 SEK in any tax year (833 per month) then you become an employer and are responsible for exployers contributions for social insurance etc
- some people pay the nanny under the table - however there can a huge legal nightmare if the member of staff has an accident in your home and is not insured...
- also there may be issues if an illegal employee causes an accident in your home - the insurance may not pay ... (hide full quote)

I agree with most of the things. A professional company usually has professional babysitters, better availability and papers to indicate that their staff don't have criminal records. It can save you the time and hassle for looking for new babysitters. Plus if you think it's worth it, you just pay half the fee while the rest is paid by the tax agency.

In my personal experience, the babysitter that took care of my child was a real professional, not just your average whatever looking for an extra job...
