Am I the only one who cannot understand why places like ICA and COOP frequently have no customer baskets at the entrance and who has to go looking for one at the checkouts? Do staff in shops not give a monkeys for customers?

I wouldn't say this is uncommon at all, I have had this happen to me plenty of times but its probably one of the things that doesn't bother me that much about the stores in Sweden.
I find it very frustrating how non-service minded Swedish companies can be sometimes. |

I face this problem every, Friday, and Saturday evenining in Hemhöp in T-Centralen but it is not really a huge deal as they are always get accumilated at the cashiers (kassan). What annoys me a little is the waiting in line part and then the people standing behind me push their baskets just right behind my feet :S hate it!

nearly 20 years on stockholm and i've never not found a basket coming into a supermarket. the 16 years i lived in town i was in a supermarket 3-5 times per week (konsum, vi, ICA, --all of them) and now just north of the city 1-2 times/week. seems you live in a crap area.

Strange, I shop there sometimes and never have had that issue. However, what I hate about Hemkop at TC is the ratio of cashiers in relation to customers and the abysmal fruit and veg section they offer. |

What fruits and vegetables are missing there? they seem to be fond of apples though. and you're right about the cashiers. the lines that form are funny sometimes. once i was in a zig zag shaped line.

Some supermarkets run on a skeleton staff to keep costs low (seeing as the rent may be high or a lot of ÖB for long opening hours)
There's a Willys near me that employs only 5 staff and the idea is that everyone multi-tasks so that the cashiers are expected to deal with the baskets and stack shelves during quiet times and the manager works the checkout in busy times .... problem is that if it is an unusually busy day these jobs don't get done Although I did go to a supermarket that actually didn't have baskets at all - they expected everyone to have a trolley - think it was a City Gross |

I have a similar (but not the same) experience at a local COOP: after getting into the building, you make your way into the supermarket itself through a bunch of those one-way gates. Once in, you start looking for the baskets only to find none. Turns out they are tucked away into a corner far to the right immediately after you get into the building but before you get to the proper supermarket area. Basically, they can't be seen from any angle on your normal way into the COOP and unless you know where they are (and remember before it's too late!), you won't get one. On the plus side, they always seem to have plenty of baskets in that spot... wonder why... |
