I want to mail letters to the US from Solna (Karolinska Institutet).

Question 1:
How many stamps for a regular envelope and letter (4"X6")?

Question 2:
How many stamps for a large envelope and letter (8.5"X11")?

Question 3:
Which post box do I drop it into? At the front of the Karolinska Institutet there are 2 post boxes- one says "Express International" and another simply says "Domestic and International" (image of the second box attached).

Question 4:
What is franking? I've seen reference to this on posten.se but I'm not sure what it is for.

Thanks!

Frankera or Frankering means attaching stamp or other proof of payed postage. Probably originating from the Italian word "franco" meaning "free from duty" (the recipient was not supposed to pay for the delivery), that postal employees used to write on things when the sender handed over the goods/envelop to be delivered and payed the postage. In Italy a postage stamp is called "francobollo" where bollo means stamp, marking or brand, like the Swedish word frimärke (fri=free, märke=marking).

I just turn up with my envelop at Pressbyrån and they give me the right stamps/stickers.

I believe you need the domestic and international box - never actually seen two boxes together before.

Good luck!

When in doubt, drop the letter in the standard yellow box. Can't go wrong.

In other words, the size of the envelope doesn't matter, the weight does. So a 12 kronor stamp will do.

A note on mailing packages: if you're sending a package within or outside of Sweden, sending it in an envelope (as opposed to a box) won't save you money. If you need a confirmation, that's a different issue. But a real box instead of a envelope is the same although Posten's Portoguide will label it otherwise. So even though the guide specifically shows 2 tables (Brev and Postpaket) and even has a little envelope and box icon, a box can still be classified as a brev based on dimensions and weight! It took me a while to figure this out but have since save money on shipping because of it.

I should add that I'm not talking about the colored prepaid boxes and envelopes. This is if you're sending something with a regular old box and your own envelope or baggy.
