Whats your view on this latest story regarding the international arrest warrant for Julian Assange?

Guilty? or Innocent?

More important, does this send a strong message out to "rapists" or has this whole affair made the swedish legal system appear corrupt by all their bungling? (and suggestions its being done as a political smear due to his website)

Whatever your view ... he has a cool name .... Julian Assange

I think it's quite transparently a Central Intelligence Agency black op designed to destroy the man. This sort of thing is old hat for the CIA. It's the kind of thing they do professionally, and have been doing for decades. They have it down to a science.

You fuck wit' the CIA, they gon' drop tha hammer on ya ass.

That said, I am a big supporter of Julian Assange and WikiLeaks. A modern-day high-tech Daniel Ellsberg. Go WikiLeaks! Go Julian Assange! Blow the cover off the Pentagon! Yahoo!!!!!!

Great point. Except CIA are more likely to drop a pen rather than a hammer. Haven't been effective for years except using those Reaper drones which more than often screw up.

SD joke aside, I will admit that the first time this rape story came out, I thought the same thing. A total CIA set up. But then, as you say Kev, it is way too obvious. Besides, why some sketchy rape claim in a country where jail sentences are minimal. Why not frame him for murder in a country where he could be detained for a long time?

Wasn't he accused of rape but acquitted / charges & investigation dropped very soon after, not too long ago? Is this the same case that they are bringing up or are these new occurances?

This horrible man has to be locked up. He had no right to release internal documents that name civilians in Iraq who have helped the peace-keeping forces.

He is the school-prefect and the tell-tale tit we all despised in school. The one that would stand in a group quietly so you would hardly notice him. Then when you thought you'd got away with sneaking out to the chip-shop at lunch he'd be standing at the hole in the fence with the head.

The public does not have the right to know everything. These last 400 000 documents were merely reports of incidents to higher ranks within the army. The result is that these are no longer written and in the future tens of thousands of incidents will go unreported. Of course there are a few bad-eggs in the army and the reports that were written did iron out a few. These "few" now have a greater chance of slipping through the net.

As for the actual rapes. This man is accused of some very serious crimes. It is widely accepted (see Flashback) he had consenting sex with both ladies but didn't use a condom correctly. In one case it appears it slipped off and he didn't bother to tell her. In the other case she "might" have changed her mind but he continued despite her saying she had changed her mind. It also appears that its not the women who have pressed charges, its the police as rape is a public offence and the charge does not need to filed by an individual. If girl A, (brother of manB ) is raped by man C and A does not want to press charges but tells B then B can file charges against C even without consent of A.

I was actually in support of Assange until I researched exactly what kind of document had been released. Thanks to the BBC I know realise what a danger this man and his website are.

As Flashback is in Swedish I have taken out the highlights...

Found a Swedish summary of the story so far on flachback. Here is a translation. The original is at https://www.flashback.org/sp25229122 (Click on visa to show)

People:
JA - Julian Assange. Founder of Wikileaks
AA - One of the women who accused JA. Is almost certainly the press secretary of the "Socialist Brotherhood Movement". Cousin to a Swedish lieutenant colonel in Afghanistan.
SW - The second of the women who accused JA. Lives in Enköping.
MHJ - Maria Häljebo Kjellstrand, duty prosecutor in Stockholm City. Married to an expert of the Justice Minister Beatrice Ask.
LF - Lisa Finné, Chief Prosecutor
CB - Claes Borgström. Legal representative of the AA and T20
LS - Silbersky. Legal representative of JA.
MN - Marianne Ny. Head of the Public Prosecutor's Office Development Unit in Gothenburg. Handling of the trial.

Background:
JA is a little longer stay in Sweden for various reasons. Among other things, he should speak to with social democratic organization. AA handled the invitation and had contact with JA before the visit. JA is known to spend at least the first night with AA (Saturday 14/8 - Monday 16/8?). A few nights later (Tuesday 17/8 - Wednesday 18/8?) JA stays at SW instead.

Tuesday 17/8
JA - goes to Enköping and stays with SW (Maybe even Wednesday 18/8)

Wednesday 17/8
AA and SW - declared to not have known each other before - may be on Wednesday 18/8 (maybe Thursday 19/8) meet . Then the following occurs:

Friday evening 20/8:
- AA and SW to contact police for "discuss" what they say they have been involved with JA.
- The police make a complaint of rape and sexual molestation.
- Duty Prosecutor decides to ask JA in absentia for a case of suspected rape and one case of suspected sexual molestation
- Someone is leaking notifications and JA's name to Expressen. Within 24 hours is the story on major news media worldwide. Whoever leaked is still unclear. There is plenty of speculation but no proof.
- Possibly - SW undergoes testing for diseases.

Saturday 21/8:
- Chief prosecutor Lisa Finné drops most charges. "I do not think there is reason to suspect that he committed rape," says Eva Finn ". What remains is a notification of molestation (possibly with a sexual connection, but it still seems unclear)

Tuesday 24/8:
- Lawyer Claes Borgstrom suggested on behalf of AA and T20.
- Lawyer Silbersky proposed on behalf of JA.
- On http://rebellabloggen.wordpress.com/ Sarah Gunnerud writes what appears to be AA's version of events. It describes it as if JA had sex without a condom against AA's will. And that AA and SW sought out the police with a view to hear if/how to force JA to test for various diseases. Whether this is the true story or not, we do not know. Moreover Sara Gunnerud describes JA in a clear negative way when it comes to his way of dealing with women.

Wednesday 25/8:
- LF issued a press release in which she announces that the preliminary investigation will be initiated for a case of molestation. LF says that she does not doubt the information provided (by SW) but that the information obtained is such that the suspicion of rape does not exist.

JA, in a conversation with Silbersky said he is totally innocent, both legally and morally .. And that JA suffered "enormous damage" by the incident.

Thursday 26/8:
- Data from unclear source (possibly JA) argues that the harassment refers to the fact that JA does not want to move out of the AA' apartment when she asked for it.

Friday 27/8:
- Just before the Swedish authority closes for the day CB submits an appeal of the decision. CB now demands JA is charged with two counts of rape.

Sunday 29/8 - Tuesday 31/8:
- According to the magazine Resumé, the first hint to the Expressen came through SMS from an unknown sender to the freelance photographer Stefan Soderstrom, who was at Harpsund together with reporter Niklas Svensson. Svensson was informed with Expressen journalist Diamant Salihu, who roots up more information by contacting another source and then call the on-call prosecutors MHJ who confirms that JA is charged in his absence.
- A persistent rumor from several sources claim that the problem between AA and JA was that the condom broke during the act. On top of this there is then a lot of speculation about how it happened and what happened next.
- According to an equally persistent rumour the issue between SW and JA is that they had unprotected sex. Whether this was agreed between the parties or not and how an undesirable situation has arisen or is not yet known.

Monday 30/8:
- JA questioned concerning harassment.

Wednesday 1/9:
- MN decides that the investigation of rape (in one case) should be resumed and that the investigation of harassment (in one case) should be extended to all events in the notification.

-------------------------------------------------------

One has to think of the motives for naming, if the thousands of posts on flashback provide any sense then it seems that Diamant Salihu (contacted MHJ who confirmed that JA is the alleged rapist. This was even before it had been decided whether or not to press charges.

Also worth noting: It appears that on Friday evening (20/8) that the 2 women contacted the police to discuss what they claim to involved in with JA. When the police heard the story they (THE POLICE) - made a complaint of rape and sexual molestation. ie, It appears (flashback.info) that neither of the women have claimed that any assault has taken place. This also means that the women can not drop the charges as the charges have been bought by the police.

Two main theories now exist:

1) An overpowering man who is not able to connect action and consquence persuades 2 women within a few days of each other into the bedroom for a kiss and a cuddle. They are in awe of this man and his reputation. He is not easy to say no to and the "act" begins. Despite attempts to use protection it is not successful and each woman feels they were unlucky. However when they then meet and compare notes they realise that there is a pattern and that he probably did it on purpose. (Oh he did that to you as well). They contact the police to ask if they can force him to take a test at the doctors. The police understand the law more than the women and decide to make the complaint based on what they have heard.

2) He gets both women into bed but in case A) He says he will be true to her and he is not the kind of guy to sleep around. A believes she is in for a few weeks of the same treatment and just loves it. In case B ) He says he has not been with anyone for months whilst talking her into it. She also loves it. In both cases the women ask for protection but neither of them are used to it and "accidents will happen". Both women now feel they have an ongoing and exclusive affair with one of the most famous (for 15 minutes anyway) men in the world. In their group of common friends someone puts them in touch. They now realise they have been lied to by a cad and take the story to the police. "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned"

Thanks Essjay!

The public does have a right to know everything. It's our money that's being spent. If my government is going to waste TRILLIONS of tax-payer dollars on wars that never should have happened in the first place, you can bet that I'm going to cheer loudly from the highest mountain tops when Julian Assange, WikiLeaks, or anyone else blows the cover off the Pentagon and their lies!

I LOVE IT!

If it was blowing the lid of the Pentagon and possible lies then this would be different.

What has been "blown" is name of under cover agents, details of incidents as reported to higher-in-command officers again with names. The result is that the armies themselves will be reluctant to report incidents. Assange has probably killed hundreds of people with these leaks.

As for WMD. Even if we didn't find WMD we knew they had them because we sold them to them. Whether or not they are still hidden underground or destroyed it does not matter. Had we not gone in during 2003 Saddam would have continues. This weeks big story "could" have been a suitcase Nuclear in London with 2 million dead.

I rejoice in the victory we have in Iraq and the progress being made by our brave boys over there. We know that Saddam will never use WMD against us, I'll take that over the risk of "what if we had not gone in" any day.

I disagree vehemently with the "public's right to know everything" as the withheld information is about our technology and military strategy. Did the British public have a right to know that the landings were set for the Normady beaches? If Assange (and Internet) had been around in 1944 we would have sufferred hundreds of thousands of more deaths because of leaks about the closely kept secrets of war.

So basically you're saying you agree with and support the CIA's black op character assassination campaign against Assange? Too bad the CIA couldn't just do it the old fashioned way and have him die in a car "accident" or "plane crash," or maybe even die of "food poisoning," eh. But I guess maybe that would be a bit too obvious.

No way this kind of leak will save millions of lives. Because the more of these kind of leaks that happen, the more it will undermine the U.S.'s war effort and they will have to pull up stakes and leave the Middle East. That is the way to save lives: have the U.S. GTFO of Iraq and Afghanistan. No residual forces.

You seem overwrought by the "hundreds of people killed by Julian Assange." Where is your concern for the millions of innocent Iraqis, Afghans, Pakistanis, Iranians and others in the Middle East who have died as a direct result of the U.S.'s imperialistic meddling since at least the 1950s when the CIA violently overthrew Mossadeq?
