Hi,
I'm considering moving to Sweden. Can anyone confirm what the typical deductions on earnings are? My understanding is that, in Stockholm at least, it's 30% for income tax, plus 7% for social security = 37%! I'm not aware of employers having to deduct anything else, or any additional deductions one might have to pay separately. Any confirmation appreciated! Many thanks, Alex |

1. Go to: http://www.ekonomifakta.se/sv/Fakta/Skatte...a-ut-din-skatt/
2. Select the region you want to live in 3. Enter your expected monthly salary (before tax) 4. Enter no other incomes, not a member of the Swedish church 5. Enter your birthday 6. Click beräkna and watch as the site magically answers all your questions |

Dear Teslar,
Sorry to get back this late - site wouldn't let me post reply till today. But many thanks for your help - what a wonderful site (Ekonomifakta)! If you're still around, am I right in thinking that other major government deduction is social security, at 7% of salary? Or are there other deductions I've missed? Many thanks, Alex |

No, there is no social security deduction that you can see as an employee.
Take this simple example: If you have a monthly salary of 30000SEK/month you will have 22500 in your pocket after tax. Social security is paid entirely by your employer, so you don't see that money at all. If fact, your employer pays about 30% on top of your salary in social security and pension, so your cost to the employer is actually 39000. |

The government also pays a tax allowance to workers (jobbskatteavdrag) so the average deductions for a person on average salary are around 25% (depending on the income tax level of your home kommun) but more if you are a high income earner earing over 33,425kr/month as then you have to pay state taxes on the income above this level
Social security is as Bender says paid by your employer on top of your salary and not included on the figure quoted to you |

Dear Bender and Puffin,
Apologising to you this time for replying so late - just worked out that, for some strange reason, site will only allow me to log in and post messages in the evening (can only assume because it's oversubscribed during day, but still - weird). Many thanks for putting me right on social security deductions - wasn't entirely clear from other sources. And thanks also for the other helpful titbits of info - invaluable. Alex |
