I can see there are already a lot of threads about this on this discussion board, but I'm afraid I am going to add one more.
My partner and I are getting married in the U.S. this summer and headed to Sweden right after for our honeymoon. We'll be in the Stockholm area for most of the week leading up to Midsummer, and will be headed to Gothenburg some time either immediately before or after the holiday weekend for a few days. I've done my research, so I know the cities will be pretty empty over Midsummer, and I've been trying to make plans. Any suggestions on what we could do? We'd like to experience the holiday somewhat traditionally if we could, but are obviously not very familiar with smaller Swedish towns or the countryside. It seems like Skansen is a popular destination for families, although only during the day. We just want to make sure we have something to do and somewhere to stay, so any advice would be appreciated! Thanks! |

Why not visit the archipelago in Stockholm? You can go by either ferry; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9htGonmCjwg or take a powerboat; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUFqUozdioE...feature=related.
You can also take a ballontrip to get a better view of the city itself; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSWaCJ6ZFCA...-dEqZFqhHb6bAA= Skansen is more then a park or zoo and open air museum, it`s also the spot for free conserts during the summer. But you need to be there early to get a spot; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sARJkrjjEG4 If you get thirsty from all that singing you can visit the Absolut Ice bar; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xv9DyZ4Io7A...;feature=fvwrel And after that you can go partying if you want aswell; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5RuPLgpFoc |

Thanks! The archipelago seems like a popular choice, so that may well be worth checking out. We appreciate the advice!

I would take a private floatplane (seaplane) flight over the archipelago and then land at the coast of Gotland. Spend a weekend there. It just seems like something that would be appropriate to do during a honeymoon trip.
Grafair flies from the centre of Stockholm and they do exactly these kind of custom flights: http://www.grafair.se/ ~~~PDX~~~ |

That sounds like a lovely idea, but probably a little beyond our price range. I bet we could do some kind of variation of that plan, however. Thanks!

Make sure and see the Vasa Museum...if you have any energy left.

Vasa, yes!
But, by all means make sure you have enough time indoors to cement your "partnership"! |

Vasa is on our list, for sure.
And the, uh, cementing will certainly take place as well. Ha! |

When in Sweden you should experience the local ways, such as cementing outdoors.

I was wondering when someone would suggest that.
Clearly this will take place at the Archipelago. |

Cementing ?
Seriously, you ought to get him checked out if he is capable of "cementing". |

Could we possibly get that taken care of during our trip? You've got much better healthcare than we do.

If you're in the Stockholm area and want to see a traditional midsummer head down to the picturesque village of Stavsnäs By (45 mins by Bus 433 or 43 from Slussen). Some years they put restrictions on numbers as it's so popular. There's an excellent bakery/pub where you can have lunch/dinner.
Like most things midsummer, it always depends on the weather |

If staying in Stockholm town I would recommend Skansen during the day and then the traditional Swedish midsummer smorgasbord at Grand Hotel in the evening.
If you want to stay in close to Stockholm but not in town I would take one of many boats to the archipelago and stay over night for traditional midsummer celebration and go back with the boat next morning. Boats can be found here http://www.stromma.se/ and here http://www.waxholmsbolaget.se/ Information on nice islands and accomodation in the archipelago can be found here http://www.visitskargarden.se/ Most islands are within 1-2 hours from city centre. |
