I was wondering if i can add my title to my bank and credit cards and id card here in sweden, I want to add my title of Laird(Lord) rather than Mr to my cards if i can here!
My cards at the moment just have my name on them with no Mr before my name and i want to add my title "Laird P. Muir" as an example I have the legal title deeds etc to give to banks etc if needed, But my question is,is it something i could do here in sweden and how would i go about doing it? |

Swedish companies and authorities do not use titles at all, only your name.

Whatever your title, we are equal in law, in Sweden.

Yup, you're the same as me, a lawyer, a doctor and a binman here. My girlfriend is looking forward to her next visit to England as she's about to graduate as a medical doctor, so she can proudly go to Barclays and change her name there

I remember when I got my first bank card in the UK and was shocked that titles appeared on them and that this was considered totally normal. How would he necessarily know that things are done differently in Sweden unless he asked (which is all he was doing...) |

Thanks for the replies folks ! If anyone has anymore advice feel free to post!
@ Rick I am not looking to "flaunt" my title here in sweden as you put it! Just like you use/used your title I.e. Mr or Dr or whatever it may be on your bank cards, utility bills, driving license, when you didn't live in Sweden, it was the same for me in Scotland albeit my title is Laird(lord)! It is my right to use it right? Just like you use Mr etc?! If I can use my title here in Sweden I intend to but not to "flaunt" it!! As before if anyone has more info on this for me that would be great |

As before if anyone has more info on this for me that would be great In principle, do not expect your title to appear/be usable very often. Titles as you would understand them in the UK have, for the most part, been abolished in Sweden (if I understand the situation correctly). For those that were titled, they became a part of the person's name (hence the Swedish naming law that prevents people from using certain noble family names). Politically, the use of titles has been, in recent times, been looked down upon (read about the du-reform for more info on this), and as you probably know, the use of titles in addressing people is more or less completely absent. |

Errr... because if his joining date and previous post history is anything to go by he has been living here with a swedish sambo for years So you are excusing rudeness and ridicule simply because he asked a simple question and, based on your limited data, he should "know better"? Aren't we supposed to be here to be supportive and helpful to each other? I would think that if you asked a question as harmless as his, you would hope to get some sort of help or, at least, not a rude retort. It's a web forum, you don't have to read a topic if you don't want to. |

muir318,
Is your title that of a family estate that has been passed through your family or part of a sale of titles that are often sold on the internet? http://www.faketitles.com/ |

You will have to go back quite a few years to find anyone using titles in Sweden.
Back in the 60's they were on everything, and it was almost a sin not to use them when simply talking to a person. Then you spoke in the third person "Would the Doctor care for coffee?" "How does the 'Priest's Wife' (Prästinnan) feel today?" As has been mentioned - the Du reform brought about quite a radical change, and that was seen to be, when looking up telephone numbers. No longer was the title of the person concerned mentioned. On the many cards issued in Sweden today, it is seldom that they even manage to take on any middle initials. Usually you just get your first name in full, which mostly comes after your surname, and that is it. You get no chance of any claim to fame whatsoever. So, my friend, laird or not, in Sweden you are unfortunately simply SMITH JOHN, and all I can say to that is - this is Sweden, like it or lump it, there is little other choice in the land of 'equality'. Sorry and all that. |

If the OP has purchased a title from the internet, I for one would be willing to to add the title "mug" when refering to their honor.

muir318, . Is your title that of a family estate that has been passed through your family or part of a sale of titles that are often sold on the internet? . http://www.faketitles.com/ My title comes from family/ Clan estate passed down through family! As for buying plots of land/estates from heritage sites etc over the Internet I don't see as a bad thing! As it helps to promote conservation of tracts of land in Scotland and also stop development etc on pristine scottish land due to different allocations of plots!! As for fake titles .com the owner of that site an English aristocrat ( I think anyway) with a major chip on his shoulder nothing more !! |
