There was a pattern of Washington tolerating no independence or interferring with policy-making, especially with the current enemy. When Raoul Wallenberg did it with the Nazis to help Jews, especially Swedish ones, the OSS made no attempt to retrieve him, though he was one of its agents - it was all a Stockholm problem, and it was too afraid of doing something more to offend it. As a result, Wallenberg was left to his own devices while in Soviet hands, and died during interrogation when Moscow tried to do something domestic with him. Then it was Count Folke Bernadotte's turn when he tried to build on his helping stop the war in Europe in 1945 by stopping the growing conflict in Palestine, but Washington did nothing to stop his murder by the warring Israelis. To open the whole can of worms now about Dag Hammarskjöld's assassination after Allen Dulles got the Belgains to kidnap and kill the Congo's Patrice Lumumba is a most risky adventure. Then it was Britain's turn to do it when he threatened to patch things up in Katanga. When the East-West confrontation with the Soviets was focused back in Europe,. it was London's turn again when Olof Palme was thought to be another Soviet stooge. And there was all kinds of collateral damage by the ensuing cockup. And another surrogate, Meir Dagan's Mossad, had to take Anna Lindh out when she threatened America's domination of Europe. In sum, the treatment of the leading Swedes by America since WWII is something no one in Stockholm, especially at the Foreign Ministry, wants to even look at, much less do anything about at this most late date.
