Hello again all,
I am looking to buy a 2008 Land rover discovery TDV6 to use both for my work and for my family as the car we have at thye moment isnt suitable anymore.I have my eye on a used landrover but with high miles and was wondering if anyone knew any links they could give me for costs relating to a full engine rebuild or if any of you could give me a rough estimate of costs for the work here in sweden Göteborg in paticular if possible. In the uk i would be looking roughly to pay around 3 or 4 thousand pounds..

Thanks in advance for all and any info..

A rebuild on a diesel is costly and varies depending on parts to be replaced and also the exact nature of the motor issues.

If you know already the exact issues with the engine it would narrow down the price quite a bit. Also bear in mind that Land Rover is not a big brand over here and there are not that many dealers who could work on it and do the proper diagnostics, tests and certify the warrnty etc etc ..
A straight engine swap would be more effective cost-wise and quicker too. Check here for second hand TDV6 engines in Sweden. Also you could keep the old engine and dismantle as parts to sell to offset the cost.

Most scrap/parts dealers are happy to negotiate with price depending on the mileage and condition of the engine. Also the fact that there are 9 engines available and not that many Disco TDV6's in Sweden means that you have bargaining leverage smile.gif

Best of luck!

If you go into this site and send an email with your question he will give you good advice. He is the motoring journalist for the Daily telegraph http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/ i think it would be a lot cheaper in the UK. Good luck

Thanks for the replies guys,
there are no faults with the land rover just high miles19000 mil and i will be buying it from a main dealership here.i just thought it would be a good idea to have the engine stripped and re built and basically new again when done if the price was ok that is..
Anymore links advice etc feel free to leave them.
cheers

19000 mil on a lad rover TD6 is just run in, if it has been serviced correctly the engine will last for many more mil without problems.

As Voyager says, 190 000 km (that translates to about 118 000 miles) is nothing for a diesel. I was with Perkins umpteen years ago, and they would have said it was hardly run in at that distance. The modern diesel is even better, motor-wise. It is most often the ancillaries that take the knock, turbo, injectors, pump, generator. Far better have these checked over and not disturb the engine as a whole, and of course the vehicle as a whole, including the transmission. That takes more knocks than the engine.
The old saying - if it ain't broke, don't mend it - is very wise.

Totally agree.

In my last UK job we had these engines in landrovers, they were soundly thrashed up motorways and forest tracks, and over true off road territority, in all weathers. We had a 5yrs or 100,000mile(uk mile) replacement contract. But, we never had any major mechanical problems. They are quite reliant on electronics though, the engine is a good work horse, we had some alarm/immobiliser/engine management issues but it's not major mechanical and should be a dealer issue. Just check who owned it previously, you don't really want one that spent half it's life thrashing up green lanes every weekend, but look underneath, it would be hard to hide any scratches and scraps on the protective metal plates.
Rebuilding an engine that doesn't need it, will probably cause more hassle, just one leaky gasket and you've got hassle, especially when now you know it is fine. They aren't very economical though, when worked hard, they were no better on fuel than the petrol v8s we previously used!!

As the other posters said, no rebuild is needed. If it 'aint broke don't fix it. So long as the proper service has been done then it is all good.
There were some slight design changes to the engine management system in 2008 from the first production in 2004/5 of the Disco III and the TDV6 engine management system. Most if not all of the design and warranty issues should not apply to the 2008 version with exception that it was comon for the turbo exhaust flap to get jammed. But normally happened after the few thousand kms so guess it is not a worry on a 190k car smile.gif

I have had two Disco III's before moving here and loved them both but they are thirsty engines as they have a lot of weight (2,5 tons) to carry around. Just as a hint, they are reletively to remap and get either:

1. An increase in Torque and HP (from 440Nm to 510Nm and 190HP to 226HP). The remap is not the same a cheap POS chip you buy on e-bay as it is customised to your particular car and engine and driving habits. I have done this on my Disco's and my current car (Touareg) and love it. For the same mpg you get more power.... or

2. You can also get a map that drastically reduces the mpg by up to 15-20% whilst maintaining the same factory power and torque.

For example, on my 3.0 V6 Tdi Touareg I use my power map in the Summer and get 10L/100km on average. In the Winter I use the eco-map and that changes to 6.5L/100km (I drive at a slower pace in the snow and ice coupled with the map makes a 35% saving on my fuel bill each month).

To put it in perspective, that equates to over 1000kr a month I save in the Winter months in diesel. The initial investment for the remap was 5500kr so it paid for itself in the first Winter season.
