Hi....going to a wedding and looking to buy a suit. Having treked around looking for a suit in Stockholm, it seems that suit designers have no adventure left in them and whether its Dressman or Hugo Boss, they all seem to be the same look...black, grey and plain. Of course Hugo Boss will be better quality, but I don't want to look like everyone else, but at the same time not look like a Maverick ie. Paul Smith who I like, but goes a little bit too far and pricey as well.

So...anyone have a good suggestion where I can go for an off the peg suit where imagination is used?

Thanks.

It's all about the cut and cloth. Hugo Boss have some lovely suits at the moment with differing colours abeit blue or grey, The grain of the cloth make them stand out and the slimmer cut can make even the middle aged man look damn good.. I wouldn't put a Dressman suit on a pig.

For a wedding, the classic colour would be navy blue, rather than black, grey or plain (whatever that is?). However, if you own a plethora of suits, perhaps linen is an alternative for summer - I think Filipa K does some good off-the-peg linen suits.

My personal preference would be to have a look at Ralph Lauren first. Then go to Barkarby (discount outlet) and look at Filipa K and Hugo Boss. Stick with navy blue (you can use it for interviews, work etc in the future), good black shoes, silver or gold tie and add 'personality' via your choice of pocket handkerchief.

Grey does look great though, so don't dismiss it. Prince Charles is a good one to follow here. Seriously.

The most important thing you can do is to get the suit adjusted. Adjust to fit - whatever the price it will look better than an ill-fitting suit.

Fly to London and do it properly.

The real problem with suits in Sweden is the ridiculous presence of polyester in the suits. As if most of them weren't already expensive if they weren't woven with polyester, compared to the rest of Europe. :-) But seriously, it's almost impossible to find cotton/wool-only, even at the "good" stores!

www.macys.com have the best suits (Ralph Lauren, DKNY, Calvin Klein) at the best prices and deliver to Sweden.I use myus.com as forwarders and order the suits as separates as my chest size trumps my waist.

Wow...nice....worth considering with some of the prices!

Maybe I'm a bit old fashioned, but I have to try a suit/clothes on. What looks good on a model, may not be so good on me and sizes can vary from one make to another. But, if I can try one and then get it from Macys then that would be possible. However, bad planning on my part, the wedding is only a couple of weeks away and therefore London is not an option.

Thanks for everyone's feedback!

If you are having trouble finding wool and cotton only you are not shopping at the right stores. And no, MQ/Brothers and other chain stores are not the "good" stores.

In Stockholm you will for example find the real deal at NK Mens Wear or shops around Bibilioteksgatan that offer tailoring too. In Göteborg you will find the good stuff at Ströms or Holmens Herr, among others.

I would recommend Oscar Jacobson for high quality suits, but expect to pay at least 5-10k, including basic tailoring. Brand names like Hugo Boss, Ralph Lauren can be quite sketchy when it comes to quality. Better go for one of the pure suit brands.

Also, remember that almost no suit looks good directly off the rack; it is essential to have a proper tailor.

Yeah, but that seems to be a Swedish thing. When you compare chains like H&M and Esprit and possibly Topman: In other countries, they will sell decent cotton/wool suits for prices probably equalling what would be 2,000 kr in Sweden. In Sweden, you'll be lucky to even find polyester-free suits at those chains.

Nah, Dressman and H&M have 100% wool/cotton/linen suits in that price range.

I would recommend the Nisses boutique here:

Mästersamuelsg.45. Tel.08-24 30 68
Weekdays 10:00 to 18:00. Saturdays 10:00 to 16:00

A few interesting points about Nisses and Swedish suits.

1. In North America suits for men only come in a limited number of sizes and therefore a custom tailored suit is often preferred, in Sweden the sizes offered are several times that of in the North America so its quite likely to be able to find a good fit that just may need a few alterations here and there.

2. Fabric. I know the owner of Nisses and he buys visits and selects fabric from the same factories that produce cloth for Zegna and so on. Its the quality of the cloth and cut that make a suit not the label. I have found comparable suits at Nisses for about 1/2 to 1/3rd the price of a custom tailored suit and they fit just about as well. Its a family business and they have been in Sweden for over 100 years, great people, who really know the business and how to fit a suit properly for their customers.

+1 for Nisses
My man is an ex-rugby hooker with a huge bull neck, broad shoulders and a big barrel chest. We were able to find him a nice suit jacket at Nisses that did not require alteration.

Will have a look at Nisses. Went to Ströms on Kungsgatan and it was okay. Great service, but nothing for me unfortunately. Just discovered a new shopping mall called Mood. Opened in April 2012...apparently. Really nice shop called Best of Brands in Mood....nice suits.
