I am living in US and my gf lives in Sweden. We have been in relation for 6 years; but due to our plans (both students) we had to live far from each other for 4 years! (with short visits each year)
My gf has lived in Sweden for 4 years and it is 2 yrs that she is working and has a permanent job (She is not citizen), and has bought an apartment recently. I plan to come to Sweden by the end of May and I need to come back very soon (I am working on my PhD thesis). I will come back to live in Sweden after I get my degree and we want to marry soon. I would appreciate if you could help me with these questions: Q1. If we have all documents ready, does the tax office give us a certificate right we submit them? or it takes several days or more that they give us a letter showing we have married/registered partner? *I have a visa appointment in US embassy two days after I come to Sweden, and I need to show them that I am in relation with my gf. Q2. We do not want to have a wedding ceremony in Sweden. Can we just register our marriage in the tax office? Q3. I do not want to apply for Sambo visa now. I will apply when I come back to US. So, as long as I do not need visa, will they give us a marriage certificate? I really appreciate if you could help me. |

Before you can marry in Sweden you must ask Skatteverket to perform the test that the marriage can leagally take place (hindersprov), if the test shows that the marriage can take place legally they will issue a certificate that must be presented to the official conducting the marriage, otherwise you cannot marry in Sweden. The check by Skatteverket takes approx 2 to 4 weeks. For hindersprov You, since you are not a citizen nor resident in Sweden, must go to Skatteverket personally to provide information with regards place of birth,, country of origin, citizenship(s), proof you are single and can legally marry etc... Q2. We do not want to have a wedding ceremony in Sweden. Can we just register our marriage in the tax office? If you are to marry in Sweden, then an officially authorised person must conduct the ceremony. If you have married elsewhere then the person you married must have done hindersprov in advance. Then it must be registered with Skatteverket. If you marry in Sweden without hindersprov, when you register it they will check their records to see if it was requested, if it was not then even the person that was authorised to conduct the ceremony will be in trouble, and the marriage is void. Q3. I do not want to apply for Sambo visa now. I will apply when I come back to US. So, as long as I do not need visa, will they give us a marriage certificate? With potential waiting times for relationship permits being almost a year, you probably should apply now if you intend to come later! |

Hi Yorkshireman,
Thanks so much for getting back to me that quick! For Q1. You mean that the Skatteverket test will start after I go there personally, right? If this is the case, it means that it will take up to 4 weeks after I go to the Skatteverket that they check if the marriage can take place legally in Sweden...and all these means, I won't be able to get any certificate in 1-2 days, right? For Q2,3. We did not have married yet. So, we certainly need an authorized person in Sweden. Sure...I should talk with my gf to apply for it asap. Thanks again for replying to my questions. |

I only have secondary sources, but if you marry outside of Sweden, the tax office need 6 weeks to register your marriage in the population register.

I dont have first hand experience either , but heard from a friend that Skatteverket took a week to register his marriage.
He got married outside Sweden , and had to provide a copy of his wife's passport and true copy of their marriage certificate You can also bring original with you so Skatteverket can take a copy of marriage certificate, and in that case you do not need a true copy (notarised copy). |

Q1: It will take several days.
Q2: No problem just show them the proof of marriage (any sort of marriage document) and they will register it. If your gf go to skatteverket with the proof of marriage they will register your marriage (They will change her status from single to married and your name as partner) Q3: I am not sure if they will issue marriage certificate or not. Why they will issue marriage certificate? |

Thanks "Case Officer", "gumbi", "Must", and of course "chloeff" for answering to my question.
It seems that I cannot get the certificate in less than a week. Thus, I decided to not come to Sweden now and apply for the Sambo Visa from US. Must, I have heard that if you have enough documents, they will issue a marriage certificate. When somebody wants to live in Sweden with his/her partner, they can register their marriage there to show they are not single anymore. Thanks again everyone for answering to my question. |
