I was just wondering how the local get their news. Its not really like the news you see on the big swedish news papers. Is there some major news agency they pay to get news from or what?

Most come from TT the Swedish news agency.

What they usually choose is obscure stories which they put lurid and misleading headlines to in the sole aim of getting traffic to the site in order to boost advertising revenue.

If you are looking for REAL news about Sweden or stories that are of concern to Swedes/Sweden, you will not find it in The Local. They do not even have a journalist who can string a coherent sentence together or translate between Swedish and English without using Google.

If on the other hand you are looking for the stories that even Expressen rejected as being rubbish, then this is the place for you.

I thought they put articles through 2 or 3 different translation sites, English to Swedish, then back again etc. Then split the original authors nicely thought out paragraphs up into to bullet points.

So that the article does not flow any longer.

Plus, also keep in contentious quotes and edit out anything that would add balance to an article.

They want to create debate and that means web hits for advertising revenue.

The website is not for English speakers in Sweden, it is aimed at Americans living in the USA still, who have an ancestor who lived in Sweden a few hundred years ago and take an interest in Sweden.

The only bit relevant to those in Sweden is the Discussion, Noticeboard and Property (and I wouldn't really count property either).

Think the criticism of articles on The Local is a bitter harsh.
They are generally coherent, and their source is generally indicated at the bottom.
Just read the first two on offer today, and found no fault with them.
In a few minutes when I eat breakfast, I shall see if Svenka Dagbladet has articles about them too, and how well it treated them.

I also felt the news on the local were not 'serious' news. They tend to be quite funny or they make people have long discussions about how weird sweden is. I guess it's good they have the discussion and notice board sections as i ve found those very useful.

Awww. So sorry for those who thought of TL as the last (sad) outpost of the British Empire.

to the OP: I think TL should be given tax-payer subsidies, like the Swedish Institute. TL provides an invaluable service for newcomers to Sweden who are as yet unable to read Swedish. And for regular posters--you'll learn to recognize their usernames here--it provides free psycho-therapy.

Checked SD for articles about the turndown of a review of the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize, and the incident in Falun about a suspected sniper, most topically stories in my opinion, but seems there are none.

Did notice an awful lot of ads, though, and a belated story about that funeral in Helsingborg where the deceased wanted his dog to attend. He now will. smile.gif

Nope I hope it isn't, would be nice to see some English English spelling and not the US version though, but you can't have it all.

Did notice an awful lot of ads,

with people not buying newspapers, getting news via the net, with lots of Ads seems to be the only choice these days. I'm suprised that The Times(UK) found that charging users for online news works, but at least they are getting some revenue. Also suprised other quality news sites have not followed suit if The Times model worked.

Running a good news site can't be cheap, I just wonder how much longer it will last as free resources (not referring to the local).

I think the local could be great site for people moving to Sweden, if only they would add a section containing useful information for them.

I don't see any ads, it's great.. this is what adblock plus is for. it really cleans up websites. Some ads sneak through, not many.

It would be nice if TL would follow up on stories like this.

And what about all the local ones!

How the hell they manage to fill an edition every day when a weekly edition would suffice beats me.

I just read a story on the front page concerning the royal visit of Charles and Camila.
And while much of the information regarding this visit is easy to find in English from other news sources, it appears as if it has been badly translated from Swedish to Pidgin English.

When the original stories are available in English already and they are then reprinted into pidgin English, it really does beg the question. Why?

Why?

It's a carefully devised plan to get content as cheaply as possible without being accused of plagiarism!

You mean the spelling "theater" (instead of theatre) is too much a mental challenge. Seriously?
Will be honored (oops, sorry, honoUred) to help: it is still the word for a building or outdoor area in which plays and other dramatic performances are given.

And I always thought it was during WWII when the Yanks were taking down all the English girls while visiting with their big talk and big money. laugh.gif
