Question about extension of residence permit

I'm a postdoc researcher at KTH and I have a contract with KTH which will expire in January of 2013, but my residence permit (for visiting researchers) will expire in December of 2012. That is, I must stay one month longer than the expiry date of my residence permit.
Anyone knows in this case, should I apply for the extension of my residence permit? Or should I apply for another type of visa?
It would be much appreciated if you could provide any information or suggestions.
