I have been in Sweden a little over a year now on working permits and then earlier this year I applied for an extension and would switch it over to be for family ties to my wife who I have been married to for almost two years now, well I have been waiting over 4 months now for the decision, I have called and called and called and left voicemails and called a million and a half times to migrationsverket and they are not very easy to get ahold of haha. Anyways my permit is long expired and I have to make a business trip to holland in a week and a half for a company I have started, I will be there for 5 days, It is a very important trip. On migrations website they do not recommend traveling out of sweden until the permit is given because I might not be able to come back in. Which would be horribly horrible as I am married and together with her we own a house, and If I get kicked out who knows if I can get a job in america, where I come from and I have to help her with bills and everything would be a disaster!
I will continue to call migration, but what I am hoping is if I make this trip, who ever I talk to again at the boarder back into Sweden is a real human and understands the situation, I was thinking to bring all the info that migration sent me, like that they are processing everything and what not. Has anyone been through this before? anything good come from it? Whats the point of Schengen, it seems its only good for giving countries the ability to kick people out. this is very stressful for me, also my father will be getting married in a few more months and what then if I cannot go to his wedding? I don't know what to do. Thank you |

If the trip is just to Holland, I wouldn't worry about it at all. I have never had to show a passport to any migration authorities on trips within Schengen. When you travel to Holland, you do not have to show your visa and there are no border controls. You are probably getting worked up about nothing.
Even travel out of Schengen is possible. Notice on the website that nowhere does it say that you are forbidden from travel. I am also waiting in my "limbo period" between Visas, and have needed to travel twice outside of Schengen. I was very worried about it the first time, and even the migration police at the airport told me that I would have trouble coming back, but I had all my papers in order and just explained both times that I was awaiting a decision on my visa extension, and that was fine. Your results may vary. |

Airlines can be fined for allowing You onto the flight without the legal right to enter the destination country.
If you travel Ryanair, then You will find that they have a standing rule that all non-EU/EEA citizens must have their travel documents checked at the airport check-in desk, regardless of already doing online check-in. (they are quite well known for not allowing passengers to board if they either have not had their document checked, or the permit has expired) Remember also that within the EU You are supposed to carry valid ID, and authorities can ask You to produce it at anytime, if you dont have it with you at that moment you are allowed to get it... So it is not just at the airport where You can be checked. |

I mean I still have my passport and everything, and my old work permit card, which is expired now, But I hope your right! haha I was thinking to bring the paper which shows they are handling my case and bring my marriage certificate and everything that shows I have paid and done everything I am supposed to. I mean I am allowed to be in sweden, I don't understand how I would not be allowed to enter a place I am allowed to be in... :S haha But thank you guys for the replies. I hope to get some more experiences.

There is no border checks. But the airline might ask you for the Passport and the VISA at the Check-in Counter. They check for the VISA there ( Depends on the person there ). They also check for the passport at Boarding but they check only the first page.
So , they might never check your visa page. But who knows their reaction if they find out that your visa is expired. |

So how does that work with UK citizens who dont have a state ID card? Is the "supposed" more so "they would like you to" carry such ID? |

As you have gathered, take all the paperwork with You, and if you do find yourself in any difficulty, even with the airline, You could try quoting firmly (but politely
4. Where a Union citizen, or a family member who is not a national of a Member State, does not have the necessary travel documents or, if required, the necessary visas, the Member State concerned shall, before turning them back, give such persons every reasonable opportunity to obtain the necessary documents or have them brought to them within a reasonable period of time or to corroborate or prove by other means that they are covered by the right of free movement and residence. However, you are on sticky ground since your existing work permit expired, and you have applied for a family ties permit that hasn't been approved yet. Application, does not mean You will get it, nor as Migrationsverket state very clearly, does it give you the right to (travel) enter Sweden. |

Like I said, I have left Schengen 2 times. Both times I was warned upon exit that I may have trouble on the return. I had all my papers in order, application on file with MV and had paid the application fee. Both times I was let back in, with just a short conversation explaining the situation.
I've never had to show travel documents in the Schengen EU area, they check your passport at the airline desk, sure, but they don't pick through checking visa dates. Take copies of all your documents/application for extension and be prepared, but I think that you will be totally fine just going to Holland. |

The reason to why it is taking so long, is that Migrationsverket is dealing with the abroad applications before the ones within the country. Afaik, my friend who is from Iran, vant even go to Denmark (we live in Helsingborg) until she has her extension reply. I didnt pick up on (or misser) where youre from, but Schengen is Schengen and you will probably be fine even if its supposed not to. They are usually not the best with the rules anyway.
