(edit title) Microsoft just called me to tell me ... I had trojans and other nasties on my windows PC Options

Funny thing is I dont own a windows PC

Basically, some indian sounding man phoned our Swedish landline with rather a fast speil (In English). Explaining that our Windows PC was infected and had been sending out alert signals and reports of an infection and it needed to be fixed immediately.

I obviously started to talk really slowly ... or mumble words so he stayed on the phone longer.
Hoping it would increase his phone call cost.

I had actually wanted to ask him to call my mobile number just for the giggles ... but didnt want to give out more info than he had.

Anyway he instructed me to sit in front of my computer.
And finally when he asked if I could turn it on, I said I couldn't as it was in for repair.

When I asked how could I contact him so I could resolve this problem, he hung up. LOL

We dont have a number display on the landline to see where the call originates from.
Anyone know of a way to retrieve this info?

Last time we got these "Microsoft" scammers calling us, my sambo said 2 words to them. The second one was "Off".

Just ignore them if they sound suspicious and without valid info. There have been some incidents came to my knowledge that these so called Micorosft or other IT company support guys called with some artificial issues like showing you minor system log events and as a solution asked the user to surf to a certain web page and some tools be installed in the users system. This kind of tools allow the attacker to take full control of the system and the information on it.

So it seems very plausible I am on a list.

And now I just got another one ... phoned up Telia and was told that its a big problem at the moment. So I asked ... is there anything I can do or is it generally just considered a nuisance you should ignore..

The bloke told me its considered a serious crime, but Telia doesn't do anything to help LOL
And that I should contact the Police ...

This is a well-known scam that has come into being of late.
Microsoft never ring anyone up unless you have actually been in contact with them. The only thing to do is as JulieLou40's sambo did. Tell them to - - -go.
By following their 'repair instructions' you simply lay yourself WIDE open to all the tricks under the sun, losing your identity, your private data, and heaven knows what. It is similar to the phishing scams where an e-mail purporting to come from your bank asks you to fill in the 'attached form' with your personal details, PIN codes etc since they are doing a 'security update' or similar.
Never fall for it. Never open any of the 'forms' they send.
Most banks have a security hotline whereby you can report the scam and even forward the e-mails that have been sent to you. It gives them a chance of perhaps hitting the scammers.
But this latest of a phone call from 'Microsoft' has been publicised in the daily press and in computer magazines, and people have been warned. So add the warning now to your friends also. There is some safety in knowledge.
I know it is like 'teaching your grandmother to suck eggs', but never give anyone your personal data over the internet unless it is via an https:// site that you know and trust. Anything else is a scam.

Had the same call some months back,having a number recorder, recognised the number as a friend had mentioned a few days earlier about his "Microsoft" call!
He works in a large IT company,managed 55 minutes before getting bored,then expressed his opinion STFU,bye!

Managed only 47 minutes,due to an appointment. But went one better!

I just bought a new 27" Samsung hub monitor and was having a problem to adjust the height. The manual only showed adjusting the tilt. I called Samsung support and spoke to some kid in Stockholm that did not have a clue ( I was pre-warned by a message that they were in the process of training new support staff as business is booming, before I was connected to support)

Still without any solution and Samsung's web site being useless, I searched the web for a solution, looked at demo's on Youtube to no avail and then found a link headed " Ask a Samsung Engineer". I went to the site that had a url with Samsung in it and entered my problem in the question box. I was then passed to another web site and presented with the confirmation that an "Expert" was waiting online with the answer... IF I PAID 430 KR

I finally got the problem sorted by calling Samsung again and asking to speak to the Organ Grinder instead of the monkey

Most of them are Indian scamers. It is a shame why not Indian govt is doing enough to stop this. In Indian , most of these call centers are doing scamming this days.

But what does that say about the Swedish government if its allowed to continue as it has?

Telia told me point blank, they dont do anything about such issues and all reports must go through the police. But Telia would gladly tell me the callers number at 600:- + moms.

Any phone operator should allow you to report nuisance callers without either trying to profit from such or passing the buck.

This is the Indian IT version of the Nigerian bank email scam!

These Indians even called a Swedish Ericsson software developer at his work to try the scam!! That is how daring they have become!

Just say that you have notified the police and they have call tracing software installed on your phone system(scam them back ) and they will hang up faster than you can say Ahhh!

Or start asking them for their contact info, their employee identification number etc. Tell them that Indians are way too greedy if they are now trying to scam Sweden as well.

Or start speaking in Swedish or some made up Hindu, Tamil dialect and see if they reply!!

Legit Microsoft personnel don't make unsolicited calls.

The Indians have somehow figured out that or think they can score one over the naive Swedes. Show them that we in Sweden are smarter than they think!

I let the answering machine do the policing...when they hear it's voice they hang up...works well!
