I was just wondering if there was any benefit in applying for PUT if you have uppehållsrätt. I got the uppehållsrätt 4 years ago when I first came as I could support myself from my own funds and was told I did not need a residence or work permit etc. However, my situation has changed a little and I just wondered whether I should now apply for PUT instead and whether there was any benefit in doing so or whether I should just leave things as they are.
I have lived in Sweden for 4 years, run my own business for the last 2 but in addition have actually just started working for an employer. I have no intention of going back to UK to live or work as things stand. I did the SFI and svenska A and B and will be starting another 1 year course in August and will continute to work at the same time. I have been told by several acquaintances that I should really apply for a PUT now but I am not sure if it is the right thing to do or not. For those of you who have been here long term, have you got a PUT and if so after how many years did you apply or did you apply immediately you arrived? Thanks in advance for any tips. |

After you have lived with right of residence for five years you can apply for a certificate to prove that you have permanent right of residence (permanent uppehållsrätt). According to your treaty rights, this happens implicitly and is considered equivalent to having permanent uppehållstillstånd, but if you want to be able to prove it you can apply for a certificate here: http://www.migrationsverket.se/info/348.html

I have been told by several acquaintances that I should really apply for a PUT now but I am not sure if it is the right thing to do or not. Your acquaintances are incorrect. You cannot apply for a PUT, it is issued at the discretion of Migrationsverket when renewing (expiring) permits UT's (Uppehållstillstånd), depending if the required number of years have passed etc..., or even earlier if they believe your intention is indeed to settle in Sweden. You came as an EU citizen and registered your right to reside, UR (Uppehållsrätt), after 5 years that is automatically a PUR, permanent right to reside. PUT and PUR are essentially the same. |
