Yes I'm English. I am retired and not looking to work in Sweden but have a Swedish girlfriend and spend quite a lot of time here. I tried to get a Wifi router today but was asked for the personnummer....which I don't have.

Thanks

Yes it does. To buy anything on a contract here (mobile phone etc), you will need Swedish i.d with your person number on it, and you can only get a person number if you live here.

Thanks for the reply. To me it seems a little strange that I can't do these things....but hey ho - just have to rely on the better half!

You are either a resident or not a resident - if you are just here on a temp basis then you are risky for contracts

If you are here for more than 3 months then legally you must register your residence

You don't need to be a resident to get a number, and having a number doesn't necessarily mean you're a resident.

Do you mean a personal number or a samordinings number?

I know in the old days they used to hand them out more freely but Skatteverket seem to be asking for copies of MVs residence registration these days

You can of course get a samordings number without being a resident but this is not the same as being a personal number

You def have to be a full time resident in Sweden for at least one year to obtain ur personnummer.

You need to go to Migrationsverket and register your right to stay.
Then with evidence from there, go to Skatteverket and they will fix it for You.

Co-ordination numbers are used only if You intend to stay for less than 12 months, if the stay is going to be longer You will be given a Personnummer.

That is the start, with regards contracts, even once You have the Personnummer/ID Card, if whatever it is You want a contract for requires a credit check, the odds are it will be a No. Since You have no credit history yet in Sweden.

Since You are retired, I will assume by age? (unless lucky enough to retire early with nice account), then You best get Your Personnummer quickly, since You will also need to register with Försäkringskassan etc...

Not true. It is possible for an EU citizen to step off the plane, go straight to MV and register, then head over to Skatteverket to register and have a PN by the end of the week.
