Not that I'm aware of no.

Try the strömmingsrulle from the place at Slussen who's name I forget.

Fried herring and mashed potato in flat bread. Very nice and very filling.

Sure one can purchace very good frozen or fresh fish in nollåtta land, along with decent size spuds, you are then able to make your own...

*simple as making a 'nice cup of tea'*

The Pig and Whistle pub in Söderhallarna does fish and chips..the fish is coated in breadcrumbs rather than batter, but its not bad...plus you can get a pint of Spitfire or Bishops Finger in there!!!

Nuns luv it - The Bishops finger. smile.gif

Anyway, if Stockers has a Bishops Arms pub, they do a very good fish and chips apparently, I haven't tried them yet, but the English lads here in Umeå rave on about it, and the batter has Ale in it, so they say.

I have cracked the recipe for making "english" fish and chips at home.

- buy Rygfile of torsk (white fish...comes in a square block usually 3 or 4 in the frozen
fish section of ICA) ..defrost in microwave

- get a frypan out and fill it with approx 2 " of vegie oil ie. raps...not olive oil.

- get the heat up on the fat without it "smoking" or you'll set the place on fire.
(my hotplate goes to 9, so I usually have it on around 7 or max 8 then turn down to 7)

- put plain flour in a bowl...about 5-8 table spoons.
- add one egg
- add salt
- add 1-1.5 teaspoons of baking soda
- add water
- whisp to a batter consistency (almost pancake like)

I cut the fish block into halves or thirds then using a spoon sink the fish bit into the batter
then transfer into the HOT fat in the frypan...It has to be hot!
- turn over after a few minutes..it puffs up.. cook for approx 3-4 minutes each side or till golden brown.

- Drain.

Chippies: You can do by just peeling potatoes, slicing them long and cooking them before the fish in the same oil. Otherwise too much oil then brush and do in the oven!

Works everytime...tastes just like fish and chip shop chips...you can also add beer into the batter if you really want to go the full hog!

/H

I realise you can get some excellent fish and chips here in many of the pubs but what are you guys opinions on opening a "traditional" chip shop here in sthlm like the type you get in Ireland/ England where you can get handcut chips, battered sausages, deep fried chicken, snack boxes , pork pies , crubeens, onion rings, croquettes, burgers and if course crispy battered fresh cod, would it do well here or be a flat failure???
