I am married to a Swede for 30yrs+, living together in Canada, (not my country of origin) did live & work in Sweden from 78-80 (2yrs+) and would like to know how get a Swedish Passport. Thanks.

You need to become a Swedish citizen first. Move to Sweden, get permanent residency and after three years apply for citizenship.

In case you are wondering, the 2 years you spent back when do not count as too much time has passed.
Johnjohn is right. I would however see the process in this sequence:

first apply for a visa at the swedish embasy in Canada based on your relationship with your swede.

When granted, come here and stay for 3 years, ( usually 1 yr UT and 2 yrs PUT)

apply for citizenship and when that is granted get a passport.

You cannot get a Swedish passport/citizenship while living abroad as there is a residence requirement that you live in Sweden to get citizenship

So at the moment you are not eligible unless you move to Sweden and live there for the required number of years - the eariler years you lived in Sweden not longer could as residence needs to be continuos

Perhaps you should look into Canadian citizenship/passport if you live there?

There is provision to avoid the minimum 3 year residency requirement if you have been married to, and have been living with, a Swedish citizen for a minimum of 10 years prior to coming to Sweden. Which it sounds like you have. However, you will have to show a history of a strong connection to Sweden, such as regular visits, large family presence etc. As mentioned above, you need to have been granted Permanent Residency in Sweden prior to applying. Again, your marriage history should almost make that automatic, avoiding the requirement for a UT first and then a PUT.

Glupsa is almost right but you do not need a Swedish residence permit, nor do you need to apply for one or intend to move your Sweden. This is if you live together in Canada but you are not a Canadian citizen.

Thanks gplusa...you are right I want to make use of the 10 yrs clause. I have a Canadian passport however I am not of Canadian origin. My wife and kids, all have both Canadian & Swedish passport. I have strong connection to Sweden as my in laws live there, married to Swede for 35+yrs (still living with her) and we often travel to Sweden. The question is do I need UT/PUT or can I apply straight for Swedish passport (as residency requirement is waived) and what is the process.

Reading straight from the Swedish text on Migrationsverkets website (I don't trust their English translation pages), you need to fulfill the following requirements in order to successfully apply for Swedish citizenship. You need to be 18, you need Permanent Residency, you need to have lived in Sweden for a certain length of time, and you can't have commited any serious crime.

The age category I'm assuming you meet. So that's one. Permanent Residency you can apply for while still living in Canada. I was given Swedish Permanent Residency while still living in New Zealand, so that's not a problem. The time requirement you can cancel out due to your 10 year marriage, and the final point well, only you can answer that one.

I find it interesting re the 10 year marriage cancelling out the time of residency.

I filled exactly the same criteria as the OP but still only got a UT for a year followed by a PUT for 2 and then I was right to get citizenship. But I had to be here 3 straight years. ? Not that it mattered to me me much as I was going to be here that length of time anyway, but I'm just curious as to why there would be such variation in the ruiles ?.

Why on earth would anyone be proud of his/her passport? Your passport is assigned to you not on the basis of any merit or accomplishments, but based on the dumb luck of the uterine lottery.
