If you plan to visit only the cities, perhaps public transport is easier and more economical. I have no idea about rental cars in Norway. Everything is more expensive there by quite a bit, I am not even sure about renting there and leaving the car in Sweden...I think that may be very expensive. Perhaps public transport in Norway, train to Sweden and later rent a car in Sweden. Could be quite a savings.

I usually use Hertz and check Flyertalk for a good discount code for European Rentals. Coupons can really help and the price you can get from abroad is often better than what they offer domestically. There is Budget, Avis, National, Alamo and Europcar, also. Taxes and fees are almost half the rental cost, so be sure the rate you see is the INCLUSIVE prices. Gas prices are high about 15 SEK a liter.

I use Sixt (see www.sixt.se) in Nordic countries. They always have brand new BMWs, MBs etc.

Pick up in Norway and drop off in Sweden is not going to work so you may have to change your plans in this respect.

I've had better luck getting diesels in Norway, that can save a lot in fuel costs, and cut down the number of stops. If you want an auto you're better off trying at an airport as Landvetter offered me an auto for the same price as a manual (that may have been a special circumstance). List your basic itenerary and people can suggest alternatives. You may prefer to take a night train from Sweden to Norway and rent cars within each country for before and after. If by chance you want to drive anywhere in Europe, a Sweden based rental shouldn't charge anymore as they're part of the EU.

Most rental cars in Norway have had the autopass toll boxes in them. It's quite convenient to not have to dig for change or stop for the tolls. Depending where you go, public transportation may be enough. I find having a car in Norway much more useful than in Sweden. Norway's highways are pretty good, but some of the older roads require staying alert (dual direction roads narrowing to a single lane in blind turns, etc,...).

Look for coupon codes from your airline websites and hotel websites. Delta and Radisson had some decent codes when I last looked.

I would suggest you do a sketch of any damage on the car, and make them sign it. I picked a car up that had only done 4000km it had dents everywhere I got the guy to look at it and he said shit I will put it in the work shop. What would have happened when I returned it if I had not pointed this out. I you are only going to the main towns I would definitely use public transport as already suggested. Bring lots of money it's not cheap like the states.

Except that OKQ8 and Statoil have recently changed their rental rules concerning non-residents/non-PN holders, so it is back to the big name firms again..

The petrol stations will not rent to people without a Swedish personal number. If I recall, you must have a Swedish drivers license as well.

June through August is typically the peak season for auto rentals. As a consequence, the rates generally rise during the summer. Car rental agencies do most of their business at airports. Therefore, they will always charge you more to pick a car up there than they will from their storefront in town. Plus, like many expenses at an airport, you can count on getting slammed with unexpected or hidden fees. It's better to read and learn some Tips for summer savings on rental cars. You can also fine more information at websites like CarRentalExpress.com and CarRentals.com.

i always add it to the paperwork that shows any other damage, then go back in the office and get them to initial or countersign the additions, it's up to them if they can be bothered to come out and check the car, most can't be.

On return, I take a 1 minute video on my phone, continuous footage, starting at the mileage and fuel guage, then right around the outside of the car, making sure I show that the video was taken in their car park at the end.

There are plenty of horror stories of folk having funds taken from their cards several days after the end of hire. Never had any problems with Eurocar/Alamo, Hertz, Sixt.
