Hey guys,
Any ex-pats on here know the procedure for getting a swedish ID card? I need one so that I can take out a contract on a phone. Most of the companies here say you must be residing in the country for at least 6 months, but I found a place that will sell me one if I get an ID card. I've been here for 3 weeks. I have a personnummer etc. The Skatteverket people told me I needed to pay a 400 kr fee to a bank and then bring the receipt to a police station where they would make the card for me. Do I need to go the main Skatteverket office in the city centre at all? Cheers. |

Not sure how any mention of the police station came up. The police only issue the National ID card which is only available to Swedish citizens. You're looking for a standard ID card which Skatteverket issues (as well as other bodies) which you apply for in person in a Skatteverket office and collect in person. You mention the city centre but don't say which city. If it's Stockholm, you will need to visit the SV office in Södermalm, on Södermalmsallén (the main office near Centralen does not issue ID cards) where they will take your details and picture and you will have to collect the ID card from there also. Remember to wait a few days to make sure the money is lodged before you try to apply. What place is going to give you a phone contract without the usual waiting period? |

Thanks for the info
I was talking to Telenor and they told me I could take out a contract as long as I had a contract of employment and an ID card. |

Just did this yesterday myself.. extremely simple and quick
Once you've paid the fee, takes 10 minutes at the tax office for height measurements, taking a picture, etc Was told I would get a letter in about 10 days indicating card ready for pickup. Exactly as described in the link that Temp shared. |

True but you need to buy the reader from Telia and it will cost in the 500kr range. Still worth getting but check out the banks first as Handelsbanken provide e-leg for free.

I use e-legitimation på fil, as opposed to on card. Many banks have it, check your internet banking. It may say BankID instead of e-leg. It is for free, no reader device involved, you just download a small program to your computer. Alternatively google for e-legitimation, there you have more info.
