Hi everyone,
I'm an Aussie moving to Malmo with my Swedish girlfriend who I've been seeing for 18 months. I'm coming on a Working Holiday Visa, but will be looking to apply for a partner visa once in Sweden. We have been living together in Australia and will be living together in Sweden. Has anyone else done this or does anyone know if it's even possible to apply for a partner visa whilst in Sweden on a WHV? Any adviced from someone that knows would be great Cheers, Mitch |

One of my friends I met in Umea did it (he was an aussie and his gf was swedish). He came on the working holiday and then several months later he got 4 years (I think) sambo visa or something. So yes it is possible, but I don't know the ins and outs of it.

Yep you can do that, but I'm a bit unsure why you applied for the working holiday visa if you had already been living in Australia together? It would have made more sense to go straight for the sambo visa. On a 12 month working holiday visa your rights are a bit more limited as far as education etc goes, you even have to get special permission from the kommun to go to SFI and you don't qualify for the 12000kr bonus for finishing it within 12 months and I'm pretty sure step in jobs are not available to you either (although I haven't heard of many people who have had much luck with those anyway). You may have done yourself a bit of a disservice as far as getting PUT (permanent residency) is concerned too because I think if you apply from within Sweden you have to have been living together 2 years in a row in Sweden to qualify, so you will have to wait a year after you get your sambo visa and reapply. Massive massive PITA and costs money. I could be wrong on that though, but I thought I had read that somewhere.
It's really not that hard to get the sambo visa, got mine in 3 weeks. |
