Hello,

i am looking into the process of applying for Swedish citizenship, and i got confused with something, so i would appreciate your help (since calling migrationsverket does not seem to work)

Page "Requirements for citizenship" (http://www.migrationsverket.se/info/276_en.html) states:
To become a Swedish citizen you must:
  • be able to prove your identity
  • have reached the age of 18
And then, page "Proved identity" (http://www.migrationsverket.se/info/496_en.html) states:
You can provide proof by:
  • showing your national passport in the original or
  • showing an identity document in the original or
  • a close relative attesting to your identity.
Finally, on page "Submitting an application form" (http://www.migrationsverket.se/info/281_en.html), it states:
Documents you need to enclose
It is important that you submit the documents requested by the Migration Board because it makes the processing easier. You must enclose:
  • your national passport, travel document or alien's passport in the original. If you have a previously issued passport you must also send the original
Here is my problem / confusion: Page "Proven identity" suggests that i can send any official document proving my identity. Page "Submitting an application" clearly states that i need to send in a passport - which i want to avoid

I am Greek, and that means that i am lucky / unlucky enough to have 2 official Greek documents proving my identity. One is a "standard" passport, issues by the appropriate Greek authority and the other is a "Police ID", a form of identification used internally in Greece and sometimes as a travel document. Since my job requires that i travel quite often, i would love to send in the "Police ID" and keep my passport

Do you think that is acceptable / valid way to move forward?

Thanks for the help

You can give them your passport to copy and request it returned thus being without for a few days.

Apparently if you plan to marry a royal you can dispense with the whole process and have citizenship in a nano-second.

You have to send them your passport - but you can request it be returned

You even have a web form to fill in when asking for your passport back:

Apply without submitting your passport. The Migration Board will contact you later to ask you to submit your passport when it is time to make a decision.
