I was in London last week, and read some of the recruitment ad in the newspaper, most of the IT sector salaries are around 25,000 £ to 35,000 £ per year. Some senior positions in the big company are around 40,000 £.
Hourly pay is about between 7 to 8 £ I was wondering why they are so LOW ? Lots of people in this Forum have talked about how low the salary is in Stockholm, but apparently the salary in London is much more lower. |

It is just the ads. Yes, you will see IT jobs being advertised for 20k GBP per year but no sane person would take one in London. Minimum to live comfortably in London city ? Probably around 200k GBP ~~~PDX~~~ |

pdx is probably right, if you want to put enough away in a decent pension, buy a flat etc.. 100k plus, possibly even 150k, otherwise you'll be condemned to working you but off for life with no pension or property.
to scrape by, commuting in an hour plus each way, renting, not saving enough in your pension, 25-40k, but it does really depend on what standard of living you want. rent a room, rent a whole flat or house? Nice area, or just about safe enough to walk home quickly after dark? Easy commuting, or complete pain. Congestion charge zone, or further out. Too many variables. |

25k would just about pay the rent for a one bed flat. You then need to travel eat pay utilities etc. Work it out!

It all depends on what you want. 25k and living in central London would normally mean shared accommodation. 25k gives you around £1600 after tax, 35k around £2200 and 50k around £3000.
I think quotes of 100k+ are a bit exaggerated though. I earned and still earn less than that, and have still managed to live comfortably, save and buy property in a decent area. |

A decent 1-bed place with all bills and council tax on top of a rent, in a safe and nice area would be around 1,6k per month in total. But still, do not expect to much for this money. Maybe when you are big fish, working in The City you can make a quite good living there. Otherwise it's not a place to live in, especially when you want to settle down or start a family. |

I have worked in the City of London for the last decade and would pretty much agree with what the other posters have said.
All depends on where you are in life. If you are young, single and looking for a good time you could probably enjoy yourself on a salary of about £25k-£35k, which would mean a room in a shared house in an ok area not too far out of town. The costs really build when you start having your own apartment which get prohibative for people on even a decent salary. Unless you can share the costs with a friend or have a partner who also earns I would not consider it unless you are on more than £50k a year. Having rented in London for the ten years and having good employment the whole time I would say the standard of rental properties you get for the money you pay is awful. I pay £1,300 per month for a 2 bed in a good area but the general bills & food are another £500 on top of that. So £1,800 Net before you have even bought a beer... The result is that its nigh on impossible to save for a house deposit or conrtribute to a pension. But London is a great place to have fun so I would always say it would be worth it to do a couple of years here when you don't have too many responsibilies, then get rich quickly and stay, or move! |

My niece works in IT as a project manager. She works in London but lives in Brighton. Even with the cost of commuting she has a much better house, a better environment and much more spare cash |

surly IT people are a dime a dozen thesedays? Add in the rakes of people coming from India, Pakistan etc and the days of demanding high salaries seem to be numbered.

And don't forget it's lower tax in the UK .. |

Can you provide some basis to this claim? Just outline the following costs, to show how you can live 'comfortably' on it.
Rent/Mortgage - Council Tax - Transport - |

I find most of the things are definitely cheaper in London, specially the food when you can have 2 main course for around less then 10 £, and the shopping is heaven! most stuff at least half price from Stockholm, especially the groceries shop like Tesco and etc, so i thought the salary of 30,000 £ should be live comfy enough in London, when you rent a room or something.
Most of my friends are working in retails shop and earns around 8 £ per hour, of course they live in share accommodation, and some friends are in IT fields have around 30,000 £ as well.... |

And don't forget it's lower tax in the UK .. really? I have always seen this as an illusion after you add income tax plus NIS contributions plus council tax plus ... the difference is almost negligible for a middle income person or in some cases could even be cheaper in Sweden (never done the math) after you add back the tax deductibles you get in Sweden on your mortgage, interest paid on loans, etc. |
