People don't visit thelocal for serious journalistic news. Most of the stories have appeared on other Swedish websites like Aftonbladet etc. If you're new to Sweden, it gives a small insight as to what is going on in Sweden on any given day...it's like a after coffee mint, you consume it quickly and forget about it as quickly.

To those who are shocked that in a democratic (loosely used term) society, that some companies exist to make money, then take a tablet as thelocal is no different. They seem to be doing quite well as they have expanded the business model to several countries and a Private Equity firm invested last year to enable further expansion.

The site's success is dependent on how many hits it gets everyday, which determines the rates it can charge its advertisers. If it doesn't attract enough hits, eventually it will disappear or bought out. So, it's in its own interests to play to the masses. The Daily Mail is now the top online newspaper visited in the world. It may have 1 or 2 serious stories, but the other 99% are tittle tattle gossip with pictures and it works whether you like it or not.

The Forums and the blogs are the most appealing part of the site. The news well...we all know we are fed what the mass media want us to see.

I have a friend who has a legit business and is being made out to be otherwise by the newspapers. I find it really upsetting that the news papers online or otherwise here are not accountable to what they write. As far as consumer society goes, that is a whole load of @#$%%, you can put in a complaint without having it verified by anyone. petty stuff with no substance and they don't realize how much damage they cause to people business and to the people the business employ. I am stunned at how easy it is here in sweden to write false complaints. My expereince is that in this culture the people do not like to take responsibilty for they decisions as adults should.

Anyway makes me sad and angry. Everyone has parents and children and the reporters and newspapers should take more care in what they write.

The website is not for English speakers in Sweden, it is aimed at Americans living in the USA still, who have an ancestor who lived in Sweden a few hundred years ago and take an interest in Sweden.

That reminds me...anyone know when the next series of "Allt för Sverige" comes out? I found it quite entertaining last time
