Imagine an app.
An app that had to come preinstalled on all smart phones sold in Sweden as law.

This app would use the accelerometer found in many phones today and measure the speed travelling before allowing the person to send a text message.

If said person was travelling more than say 15kph and attempted to send a text, a warning screen would pop up and inform the person that if they are in currently in control of a vehicle , then using such a device will be breaking the law and a notification of fines relating to such would notify the driver and they would need to press an "accept" button to continue.
Putting such number on a police database, and with the power of GPS allow better monitoring for "random checks".

This app would also measure the speed to determine if either a text message should be delivered, or maybe voice read out. Based on the speed travelling.

I dont like the idea of mobile phone usage while people are driving.
And while there are many who claim such law could never be policed.
I do propose that technology with a combination of law could help reduce numbers from committing such irresponsibility.

Add to this high fines and risks of driving bans and I am sure it could both pay for itself and reduce accidents.
Which in turn could help drive down the cost of things like insurance and reduce tax overheads used to pay for medical institutions that have to treat those associated to such dangerous driving antics.

I would rather imagine an app that would stop you from posting useless drivel on the forums rolleyes.gif .

In any case, I am actually surprised that this suggestion came from you, as it is a typically "Swedish" solution to a problem: make everyone suffer for the mistakes of relatively few people.

In this case, I actually like the American way of dealing with it: if you do cause an accident while texting, you could lose your insurance, and without insurance be effectively banned from driving:

The phone would have to be connected to the speedometer as there is no way for the phone to detect speed otherwise. An accelerometer would not detect steady speed.

Sweden has only just passed the 50% mark with regards the number of mobile phones in use being so called smart phones that would be able to have such technology, the rest are the standard feature phones.

In addition to that, it would be highly doubtful that Sweden could get such a legislation formulated that would meet EU Freedom of Movement of Goods etc... as this could be viewed as a resttrictive measure, let alone the fact that one could just buy a phone in another country and import.

Interesting to see that an advocate of choice and freedom is now a converted advocate of wholesale State surviellance, and tracking, of the population! rolleyes.gif ...which in todays Sweden requires court orders!
