*Cackling* Jeez! I know it's quite tragic, but I can't help myself but imagining the scene. 8) "They are not supposed to sell alcohol and tobacco products to people under 18 and it's not always that easy to tell," she told Norrbotten's Kuriren. Is this a compliment? Would he feel flattered? Paulo -> * All I bloody want to in my old phuckin* days is to be mistakenly perceived as someone in his 18's, cause it is not going to be so easy to tell something else* |

Having a unilateral policy to ask everyone for ID regardless of age is just silly and a waste of time. Jeez, not even Systembologet does that.
When I worked as a waitress we were told to ask anyone who looks younger than 25 for his or her ID, which is the same policy that Systembologet has. The guy was obviously older than eighteen. Those morons knew he was older than eighteen. Adhering to their rule was more important to them than good customer service. |

I have cousins who are 17 and look older than 25. I also know people who are 25 and they look 16. In the US at least, the punishment for selling alcohol to a minor is extreme, something like 10,000 dollars and you lose your liquor license for a set number of days (like 3 or 4) When I worked at a bar we asked everyone regardless, not only to cover our own asses, but its also a good way to keep unstable looking homeless people out of your bar, because they rarely have ID. It may seem silly, but its much easier as the boss to tell a clerk (who is not likely the next Einstein) to check every ID regardless of how old the person appears to be. |

This OLD man is 77...sorry no chance that he looked like an 18 lollito cover of a magazine...not even Prof. Ivo Pitanguy(one of the greatest plastic surgeons in the world) would be able to make him look that young. |

^ Paolo, it does seem very logical to me and you not to check the ID of a man old enough to be peter o'toole's grandfather. But have you ever worked in a retail setting as a manager? I have, and I have to tell you, you CAN NOT rely on your employees who are young, and not particularly bright, to exercise sound judgment and common sense. It is much, much easier to avoid problems if you simply tell them, "anyone who buys anything off that shelf [alcohol], has to show you ID indicating that they are born before the date listed on this calendar that automatically updates every day. Otherwise they are not allowed to buy it." If you tell them to use their judgement, then you start getting problems.
I know its sad, but its true. |

All the old farts should get together and encourage people to boycott the store, until an apology is forthcoming.

In defence of the checkout person, the job is not exactly intellectually challenging, is it possible that their brain shut down in order to get through the day?
When I was a student I worked in an off-license and once asked some teenagers for id. When they looked at me strangely I realised that they had a bottle of lemonade. I'm not blonde and I'm not stupid, my brain had gone to sleep as it was not needed and I was on automatic pilot. I still felt pretty embarassed though. |

Sometimes, you have to obey the letter of the law...as no "intent" was implied. |

Very Scandinavian... A rule is a rule. Rules are usually made by politicians with personal agendas regardless of their stupidity. In London a pregnant woman can pee everywhere without a penalty, in Italian city Tropea an ugly or fat woman cannot take off their clothes in the beach, in Hartford Connecticut you cannot kiss your wife on sundays and in Tallin one cannot play chess while having sex. Do they have to be followed? |

Walmarts cards everyone.
As for stupid laws, in Windham, Maine (US). When one goes to church, they are required by law to bring a shotgun incase of a native american attack. |

There are plenty of rules that are not NEEDED as you posted (though I would agree that ugly and/or fat women should not take off their clothes at the beach)...but there are rules there. The US has plenty of these stupid laws that are on the books for one reason or another...but this not a LAW, we are talking about. Its store POLICY that they card everyone. If this person is caught not following policy...what would happen? Boss: Why didnt you card that last customer? Clerk: They were older than my grandmother. Boss: Do you recall our policy on carding customers? Clerk: Yes, but this person was an exception... Boss: No...this person was not an exception because there is no exception to our policy. You are fired. And I would not feel bad for them. You have to follow the policy of your employer, no matter how stupid the rules are, unless they violate your personal rights. Checking IDs are not a violation of personal rights. |

Poor old guy, I'm sure at 77 he looks way over 18. If the person is covered in wrinkles and gray hair, I think they shouldn't bug the poor old man about his ID. Oh well I guess the law is the law.
