Is this not to with the fact that in some countries there were extensive problems with false documents and poor security standards for passport issue
Therefore I think that the limits on dates for acceptable passports is the date where national governments complied with the EU directive on minimum standards for travel documents |

Indeed there are problems with false documents. Romania is one of the countries on the "black list" it seems. But I really don't think it's fair to pay the tribute just because I am romanian. It's like saying all people from Romania are suspected that they have false passports. As I said it before, there are many ways to check the validity of a passport in EU now regardless of the date of issue. You just type the name into a computer and the picture pops up with all data. Otherwise how do you check if a passport is valid when you cross the border?
The standard for security was almost the same in all EU before the biometric passport was issued. But note that not all EU countries issue biometric passports yet and still those passports are accepted. Not the case with Romania. |

This isint just a problem with not accepting Romanian passports. It is the same with any EU passports. I have been told my passport was not valid ID as it was not Swedish!! Its a huge problem in Swedish business, which they seem to be ok with...
Clerk at desk doesnt know something, but instead of checking it they insist your wrong. In most other countries the clerk if unsure simply says, "one moment I will check that with may manager". It happens here at banks, tax office, etc etc. In fact one bank has even lost a case for not accepting an EU passport as ID in the European court. They had to pay a huge fine, but the following week someone was refused an EU passport in one of their branches. I just dont get it, are you seen as incompetant in your job if you have to double check something or what? Anyone know? |

Gabi, did you get the ID card after all?
I'm a Romanian citizen as well, who want to move in Sweden this year. I started my documentation and I finally find this topic, verry useful for me. I have a valid passport issued in 2006 and, after reading this article, seems that I need (just to obtain ID card) another one, biometric this time. There is no problem with this, I can get it, but the question is: do I need a new passport? Many THX. |

Swedish Tax Office won't issue an ID card without a Biometric Passport from Romania.
Without ID card your life gets difficult at some point of time as that card is required even for small things such as picking up packets from post office. |

I was in the same situation in November 2011. Wasn't told that I need a biometric passport. I had a passport issued in 2011, but not biometric, so I paid the fee, took the photo and everything, and after that I was refused. I asked for my money back, and I had to write a whole document and then send it to some authority can't remember what was it, and one month later, I got a letter stating that my request for my money was denied, and basically there's nothing I can do. So I ended up paying a load of money for nothing. |

i absolutely refuse to onbtain a Swedish ID on the basis that an EU Passport is considered lawfull identification under EU law. Yes, i have been asked for Swedish ID a few times, and no, they do not like to see an EU passport instead. Politely insist to see the boss or manager if staff refuse to serve you,and then ask the head person if they are fully aware that they are wilfully breaking EU law and can be prosecuted by not accepting your passport as ID? I dont have any problems. You may find it usefull to print out the relevent section of EU law,in Swedish, just to wave at people. If these people are unaware of the law, then you must help them understand,i for one will not see my liberties slowly eroded away.

Why do you need an ID?
I have been without a Swedish ID since 1997. I have no driving licence and my UK Passport expired so its been sent off to be replaced. When I collect parcels in ICA they all know me, I live in a small town, Mora. When I pay by card I have a pin number. However the way it used to be done, checking my signature against the signature on my card, I can't remember a Swedish shop ever where they have done this. |

Been living here three years. Still don't have a Swedish ID or Swedish driver's license. Never needed either. I managed to buy a car and register it to myself, and get car insurance. All with a foreign driver's license and non-biometric passport from 2005. No problems at all.
Skatteverket can stick their 400 SEK. It's a nother hidden tax on foreigners. Like the additional 600 SEK Vägverket charges to convert the driving license from your EU country to a Swedish one. Because Sweden is special or something. There was one time when a car rental company wouldn't rent me a car because I showed a Dutch license and didn't bring my passport (even though they told me only to bring my licence). I was fuming. I went to another car rental company. No problem there. |

QUOTE When I collect parcels in ICA they all know me, I live in a small town, Mora Yes, collecting post, buying alcohol at Systemet and entering bars/clubs are the only situations where I've been asked for ID. EU country driving license suffices. For collecting post you can use the following IDs, according to the Posten website: Check what I have highlighted in bold. Godkända legitimationer SIS märkt ID-kort Nationellt ID-kort, utfärdat av svensk polis Svenskt körkort Svenskt EU-pass ID-kort utfärdat av Skatteverket Nationellt ID-kort utfärdat i annat EU-land samt Norge, Island, Liechtenstein och Schweiz Utländskt EU-pass. OBS! Pass från Bulgarien, Cypern och Rumänien godtas inte Utländskt inplastat körkort utfärdat inom EU samt Norge, Island och Liechtenstein Utländskt pass, utanför EU LMA kort, utfärdat av Migrationsverket. OBS, gäller endast för Rek från Migrationsverket So they accept EU passports, except for Bulgaria, Cyprus and Romania. They also accept all passports from outside the EU. Basically this means you can pick up post with any passport in the world, except for one from Bulgaria, Cyprus and Romania. North Korean passport. No problem. Romanian passport from the EU. No can do. No post for you. Hilarious. There must have been some odd fika at the möte where they decided that. |

That is because You do not need an ID Card to buy a car or an ID card to buy insurance!... I know stores that have rules stating that if they request ID and You are paying with a Swedish issued credit card, they will only accept Swedish ID Cards. Even border control can refuse to accept the EU Passport if they have reasonable suspicion that it may be fake, and other places may not feel able to validate a passport, so will only accept Swedish ID Cards. There is no EU rule that states they must accept the EU Passport as valid ID, just because You say it isn't fake! |

QUOTE I know stores that have rules stating that if they request ID and You are paying with a Swedish issued credit card, they will only accept Swedish ID Cards. That happened to me once in the three years I have been here. I went to another shop. Tough break for the first shop. The two minute walk to the second shop was well worth the 400 SEK I never paid for Swedish ID. QUOTE There is no EU rule that states they must accept the EU Passport as valid ID, just because You say it isn't fake! The same applies to a Swedish ID surely. It could be fake... |
