yes i have appllied in swedish, and i didn't even bother looking if i can apply in english (why should i?)

If you want me to reply to u in swedish i would do that with pleasure incase you dont get my english.. british ppl normally dont like to see their language being humiliated!! got som tea?

anyway! back to the subject, January to June thats almost = 6 months for ma ppl who want it more clear in numbers.

about checking records in other countries?? i dont know about that process!!
In my case they did not even start to look at my application yet after 6 month from submiting my app! so if there will be such process it will take them 1000 years as i come from the 3rd world underground.

as I know, there is law against sharing information\data between different individuals\companies bla bla
but i dont know what how the migration collect this information in sweden! if they need to see which channels i look at it in my home for example, but for sure police\tax is kind of easy for anyone.

I am from South Africa. And I won't deny that I also thought alot about why my application went so quick. At the time I reflected on what about the people that applied before me...did my application just land on her/his desk, everything was in order and voilá. I often wondered what did I do...right? I filled in the forms in Swedish (did not know about the english), attached a statement from CSN, personbevis and passport and sent if off. Another South African friend of mine's application also took about 2 or 3 weeks...but I think it hardly has anything to do with the fact that we are South African..

Maybe imigrationsverket is just making up to us because VHS can't and won't give us any credits for senior high school certificates from South Africa

@Meatball - interesting to hear that the South African passport batch at Migrationsverket seems to enjoy priority treatment. 6 and 8 months, in contrast, are quite bad. So curious to understand what triggers these different waiting periods. Internet application vs. paper application is one of the criteria, I was told.

I'll try to do what gplusa suggested, handing in the passport when applying and asking to have it back after a few weeks or so. I take it that for security reasons, it is best to do the handing in of the requirements in person?

Also, how does one ask to have the passport back? Call? Go to Solna, etc?

I did the same thing. Applied and requested my passport back. Was sent in a week. It's 4 months and still waiting for the answer. And, once I tried to ring them. Lines busy. Even then they could say we still did not get your queue number. So, I know it is useless to call them. I will wait maybe 20 months more. Now waiting time could even be 2 years even the website says 15-18 months. My friend applied and heard nothing since 19 months. He applied only through post. Not through internet.

Why do they require to send them passport? Is it only in case your country doesn't allow dual-citizenship?

Dott, they have to have a way of verifying who you say you are, your identity, as originating from the country of origin that you say you are from, hence the passport.

Meatball, you did yours in 2009, things were somewhat different then for Migrationsverket's workload and backlog of applicants.Today with 40,000 applications more (or whatever the other poster said) things can take longer.

The majority of Americans in general get theirs processed quicker than others it seems.

Meat, are your South African high school credentials from pre 2007?

Hello My Non EU friend got citizenship recently. His waiting time was 18 months. He just applied and waited quietly. It came anyway. I have applied 4 months ago. I will also wait 14 months more. No choice anyway if one has no partner and no children and one from third world country. If you are either EU or a developed country person, or if you have Swedish parent children or have a sambo, then your process is quick. Otherwise you need to wait a longer time just like my friend. Good luck to all long time waiting persons. It will come anyway. But you need to just wait.

Got mine in a couple of months (3?) after filling out the online form. Comparing to getting my kids their US passports/citizenships, this was laughably and pleasantly straightforward and simple.

4 and a half weeks for me. I am Canadian, lived here permanently for 3 years before applying and married to a Swede with a 1 and a half year old daughter who was born here. Applied online, sent everything in and the was awarded citizenship just over one month later, very very very easy process, no problems, no questions or anything like that.

Ditto for me. Except for being Canadian, that is. And having a child. Do have a cat, mind.

He is from Vietnam. And, his Sambo disappeared in the middle of the application process. As, I already said. If one shows serious attachment to Sweden then their process is the fastest.
If one has child (with Swedish parent) then it is the quickest process of all, no matter even if the sambo disappears or stays together makes no difference.
Then comes if one has a Swedish Sambo.
The last and least will be for a single person who comes from third world country without a Swedish child and the disappearance of sambo. Just like my case.

As an aside, and just for the information of everyone else who's about to apply, Migrationsverket DOES NOT want you to send in your passports with the application. They will only request it, once a decision has been made to grant you citizenship

I went down to their office in Malmo prior to making an online application. I was told that they've changed their policy because many applicants had to travel outside of Sweden for business, etc. and it was always a hassle to mail the passports back and forth between applicant and Migrationsverket. So they've decided to scrap this element of the process. Strangely, their website still says you've got to send in the passport.
