In a small town in the Punjab a man once dreamt of his son climbing a tree, so high he disappeared into the sky. His son was Abdus Salam, a boy who would later go on to share the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics for his ground-breaking advances in our understanding of the laws of nature. Not only a great scientist, but also a visionary and humanitarian, Salam’s frustration at having to leave his country to further his work gave him a burning desire to bring science to people throughout the world - from remote villages in Pakistan to prestigious Cambridge colleges, from animated London to the seaside charms of Trieste, where he founded the International Centre for Theoretical Physics. This is the engaging story of his life and, at the same time, a fascinating account of one of the most creative and exciting periods of discovery in the history of physics: the dream of a unified theory of elementary particles and fundamental forces.

This is the first time this film will be shown in Sweden. We are happy to be able to show it in Stockholm, a city with a special place in Salam's life; it was here 32 years ago that Salam was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the unification of two fundamental forces, the foundation for the Standard model of particle physics. The documentary depicts the life and work of this most articulate, dynamic and passionate scientist.

The documentary, written by Giuseppe Mussardo, with the collaboration of Luisa Bonolis for the historical part, and directed by Diego Cenetiempo, has been sponsored by ICTP in collaboration with the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World and the Consorzio per la Fisica.
