The roles they play

Why do actors and actresses seem to enjoy playing key roles of people whose lives/politics/positions in life they completely decry.
Helen Mirren played the Queen, whilst totally decrying the monarchy, and made a mint out of it. Now there is Meryl Streep, playing Margaret Thatcher, whose politics she abhors, and gets nominated for an Oscar as a result.
Seems to me these 'stars' are not averse to coining it in, whilst playing people they don't like.
Do they get some kind of sadistic pleasure from it all, or is it the money?

He is only playing one of Sweden's favourite field marshalls, old Hermann G.

That's impossible. When I met Hermann he was fatter. It's not a true likeness at all!
